And even if you don't work for the city, you may feel the effects.
Mayor Sam Jones is proposing cuts of ten percent across the board to take effect October 1.
Cuts may be coming, not only to city departments, but also to social service agencies you work with every day.
For instance, under Mayor Jones proposal, Senior Citizens Services group in Mobile would lose $21,000 on top of other funding cuts made by Mobile County and the United Way.
Sheila Sears, the Executive Director of Senior Citizens Services, said, "A 10 percent cut isn't going to close our doors, but its going to hurt and its going to have a direct impact on services and programs. But as far as which programs would be cut, I couldn't say right now."
And its not just Senior Citizens Services.
There would be cuts to all outside agencies with city contracts like, according to Mobile City Council Member Gina Gregory, "Junior Miss to the Ballet to the Symphony to the Singing Children to the Swim Association to some of the bigger ones, like Boys and Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts."
10 percent cuts would also be made to sporting events like the GMAC Bowl and the Gulf Coast Classic.
But Mayor Jones said he doesn't expect any layoffs and that essential services like police and fire protection should not suffer.
Jones said, "We don't have a garbage fee planned. We certainly don't have a sales tax increase planned and that's one of the reason you're seeing us doing our projected cuts."
But didn't the recent annexation in Mobile County bring in more tax money?
The mayor said, "The economy was so bad over the last six months that it surpassed any gain we got from annexation, and then some."
What else will be affected?
The proposal calls for no new capital projects, a partial hiring freeze, and possibly additional fees for some city services like getting police reports.
And no discretionary money would go to members of the Mobile City Council for projects in their districts.
Council Member William Carroll said, "It hurts, but its also prudent that we maintain a strong budget with the city so that we can maintain basic service so that we can keep police on the streets."
Mayor Jones said he will meet with members of the Mobile City Council fFnance Committee on June 9 to further explain the cuts.
