If you live in Chickasaw, prepare to pay more on your water bill.

Residents in Chickasaw get their service from Prichard Water Works. The board voted to increase their rates by 15% starting next month. According to city officials, the increase will help them pay for upgrades to the system that are mandated by the state.

However, Chickasaw's newly elected councilman says it's not fair that people in his city have to pay extra. Adam Bourne believes that people in Chickasaw should get better maintenance and customer service if they have to pay more.

A spokesperson for the water board says that the rate increase generated will allow the water board to continue the same level of service.

I am a resident of Prichard. The customers there were notified also of an 15 % increase beginning November 2008. Unfortunately, we all have to pay this increase, but if this is going to improve the quality of the water systems then I agree.  The residents of Prichard are also paying a 15.00 Municipal Service Charge. I assume this is for the trash pickup.  The problem with this charge, we as residents are paying it but the trash is not being picked up.  Trash pick up may occur once a month if that.  Now you want to talk about a gripe….we definitely have one with this charge.

I have watched the slow demise of the Prichard Water service for many years, more than 30 years. Common courtesy and efficiency had a more rapid decline than the rest of the system. They have a number of good and competent people but they have many more that don’t need to be working there. They also are serving a lot of people who don’t seem to understand about their water usage, such as leaking facets and toilets and water left running for one reason or the other. The big bills arrive and they can’t pay them so the loss is passed on to the other consumers who have to pay an increased rate such as Chickasaw.A little while back I had a person or two who would come up here to get water from me that lived in Chickasaw and had to really watch their water usage, being they were trying to live on their Social Security. A sad situation for all in that area.

I live in Chickasaw and I agree 100%. Prichard people are rude at the water board. And don’t even know what customer service is! They have an I don’t care attitude.
