MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Public Service Commission holds ahearing Tuesday on a 14 percent residential rate increase sought by
Alabama Power Co.
The utility says it needs to cover the growing price of coal,
which accounts for 70 percent of its power generation.
If approved, a household using 1,000 kilowatts of electricity a
month would see its bill go up from $112.90 a month to $129.35
under the increase. The utility also proposes to boost rates for
industrial customers by 25 percent.
Ron Gilbert, a policy analyst with Alabama Arise, a nonprofit
and lobbying group on poverty issues, says higher electrical bills
will hit working families hard. He says they already are faced with
higher food and fuel bills.
