FAIRHOPE, Alabama -
Downtown Fairhope shopping district was shut down and held hostage Tuesday morning. Police officers, EMT's, and firefighters took control of the normally quiet downtown streets when a man barricaded himself inside the Ravenite Pizza Restaurant on Section Street.

"Trained negotiators did get him on the phone, and they spoke to him and tried to get him to come out peacefully, but he refused," says Fairhope Police Sgt. Craig Sawyer.

Detectives say the owner of the Ravenite, Richard Gambino, was intoxicated, extremely unstable and threatened to shoot anyone that came inside the restaurant. Investigators say Gambino also threatened to turn on the building's natural gas and blow up an entire city block. The tense moments turned into agonizing hours...and finally, police negotiators had to make a tough decision. The city's SWAT team boarded an armored vehicle and stormed the back of the building. Officers used a flash grenade as a diversion and were able to arrest Gambino without anyone getting hurt.

Gambino was charged with reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor. After booking, he was transported to a psychiatric hospital. The Baldwin County District Attorney's Office could file more charges against Gambino.

morning jamal. i think the entire situation got way t much attention in fairhope this week. dont think the deserved it, the specualtion and ridicule. the are okay to have around, just another part of the intricate weave of fairhope. nothing special, but certainly dont deserve to have thier accomplishments distracted from. i dont think they are bad, i just dont think they need to be held up as A founding family or pillar of the community. average family from an average town with average lives, which most of us also fit into.

A little off subject, our city actually has a SWAT team? Wow.

To make light of things. I am a local bartender here, and my gosh I am so sick of hearing this!! Last night I was asked “Did you hear about Rich Gambino?” SO MANY TIMES that I started replying “NO!! What happened?” just to see what they would say. They would even put random Gambino family members names in there, I heard last night that it was Adam, Rich, Rick Sr, the other Rick and the whole lot of them! I finally though after working for two hours today without being asked about it, that it was done and no one would ask me anymore. But sure enough, a lady walks up from a table and says “So did you hear about that Rich Gambino?”
Really? Get over it. Its not like no one saw this coming.

yes, clay she was certainly WAY off base and downright nasty which is uncalled for. Especially when she was attacking someone who’s restaurant had nothing to do with what went on in Fairhope.

The media does enough to dramatize the situation without some ignorant person making it worse by posting hurtful comments for no good reason.

As far as our views on the Gambino Family, I suppose we’ll have to agree to disagree but thanks for your interest.

and pat if u r watching it might be about time to shut the whole gambino threads off so they can get on about their business.

jamal rich has walked on the wild side for a number of years, we have all just ignored it figuring as long as he didin thurt anyone else he was okay, live and let live.had he not called attention to himself the other day he would still be here among us. i dont know how yankee rose even figured out about the restaurant in mobile, i wouldnt have thought they had anything there either, i figured them to be strictly fairhope. Yankee rose may be off base, but the gambinos arent saints, they arent that “Good” and they arent that “Vital” but they are okay to have around. if the whole lot of them left tomorrow we woudlnt really be missing anything.

There was a comment posted by “Yankee Rose” under the Gambino family talks entry below giving some remarks about Richard Gambino and some remarks about Gambino Bros on Hillcrest road. I could not get this comment to post under that area, so I’m posting here…

Unfortunately for Yankee Rose, it appears she has spoken without getting a few facts.
1. The state of Mr. Gambino as far as intoxication was not confirmed and her comment about what or how he may allegedly have been intoxicated with is ridiculous.

2. She made some comments about the restaurant on Hillcrest road in Mobile. That restaurant is not owned by the Gambinos. It’s owned by another business man who bought it from the Gambinos. He does a great job and the food is great there.

So please, before you make a fool of yourself on a comment board. Please get your facts straight. The Gambinos are a good family and they are have been a vital part of the Fairhope/Mobile community for several years
