A Mobile woman was bitten several times by a pit bull after she jumped in to help her teenage neighbor, who was being attacked.

Tessica Williams, 26, was throwing a birthday party for her five year old son when she saw the dog chasing down a 13 year old girl.

"This was sheer seconds," said Williams, describing why she ran to the girl's aid. "Nobody else was helping... Everybody was trying to run."

Williams' mom, Evelyn, said her daughter put herself between the dog and the teen and ended up being bit four times.

The attack happened Sunday afternoon on Steiner Street near Dauphin Island Parkway.

Williams and the teenager were treated for injuries at USA Children's and Women's Medical Center.

The dog's owner, who was cited for four violations, surrendered the pit bull to animal control officers. The director of the Mobile Animal Shelter says the dog will euthanized.

This is the 80th dog biting incident in Mobile this year. Eighteen of the attacks involved pit bulls, but Labrador Retrievers are the breed reported most for dog bites with 22 incidents.

Ooo! Look at those fingernails!

A cuddly cat can put a hurting on you too.

ALL dog breeds bite, ALL. The larger dogs and dogs that are bred to do more harm, do more harm. They get reported. The little ankle biters’ bites are ignored. There are leash laws in this state. Follow them. Get your animals fixed, neutered or spayed. And please do not tie up a dog. Somehow, it makes them more territorial. If you have a dog.. why is it left in the yard, alone? They are companions.

While this incident was caused by a poorly trained dog, perhaps some of the 80 dog bites reported this year were not caused by vicious dogs, but by dogs put in a situation they were not comfortable in.

I find it hard to believe that there are 22 vicious labs and 4 vicious goldens in the area.  These are normally loyal friendly dogs, but they will protect their family.

A friend has a 6 year old border collie, a family pet with a fenced yard.  The dog even sleeps on the owner’s bed at night.

A mixed breed dog jumped the fence into the border collie’s yard and she went after him even though he was twice her size.  Her owner raced out to try to protect her dog and tried to separate them.  Her arm got in the way and the border collie bit her on the arm hard.  She got them separated and shooed the mix breed out of the yard.

She went to the doctor and the doc had to file a report on the border collie that she had bitten a human.  It wasn’t right that her dog was now “marked as dangerous”.  She was just trying to protect her home and family.  She had never before, or after the incident shown any aggression to her family.

The most gentle family pet will show teeth and bite to protect his family.

The pit bull was wrong in this incident, but I believe some of the 80 dog bites by some of these breeds were not caused by aggression.

more people are shot with a BB gun than any other gun. now that bad old .44 magnum got a bad rap from dirty harry. i hear you mona. sheephead. (my new catch phrase for talking sheep)

Would it be even harder to believe that in October 2000 a Pomeranian mauled and killed a 6 week old baby?  Unfortunately, many people do not understand that the statistics that account dog bites are those that are reported.  Most people don’t report all those CUTE dogs that do most of the biting and are vicious creatures.  Labs, Huskies and Rots have a much higher bite ratio than PB’s but they get dealt an unfair hand due to people fighting the breed.  People say get rid of the PB’s??  Well people will just breed another type of dog to fight with and that one too will have to be destroyed.  Is this what our country has come to.  Step up people and take control of your animals…All animals not just Big Biters! There are lots of devices now that owners can purchase to humanly secure animals without tying chains to their necks!

Mayor Jone, I know the city could use a few extra bucks $. I wish you would raise the licenses to have a dog in the city to about $100 a year and also, double the fines. Hey, while you are at it, put a heavy fine on the owners that allow their dogs to bark at night. I haven’t had a good nights sleep at home in years because of the dogs.

The owner should be made present at the time the dog is put down. So he can see what his lack of understanding as done to his dog!

Hard to believe Labs have a higher incidence of bites. I’ve never seen an agressive Lab. But that’s just me.
