The annexation proposal has a lot of people in the Semmes area and Moffett Road talking.
The area the City of Mobile wants to annex is bounded by Prichard city limits to the east and Mobile city limits to the south.
But it stretches along Moffett Road to the west past Schillinger Road.
It includes the King's Branch Subdivision and many along businesses along Moffett Road.
One of the largest businesses is the Wal-Mart SuperCenter at Moffett and Schillinger.
Sales taxes there and at other newly annexed businesses would go up two cents on the dollar.
Mobile County Commissioner Steve Nodine represents the area and isn't happy about the proposal.
Nodine said, "We know the people of Semmes have wanted to incorporate and the Wal-Mart was the big piece of their ability of having and sustaining a tax base to have a city of their own."
Judy Hale is also against the proposal.
She belongs to a group that wants to incorporate Semmes as a city.
Hale said, "We want to incorporate because we want to keep our tax dollars here in Semmes. All of the area that they have on their annexation plans would be on what we would have on our map for incorporating Semmes."
News Five asked people shopping Friday at the Wal-Mart store what they think about the annexation proposal.
Jessie Kemp said, "I like it the way it is. That's why I moved out here. (I) just moved out here."
Wiley Mcmillian lives in the King's Branch Subdivision and said, "Growth for Mobile at this time is great, so I'm all for the annex."
Charlotte Stetson lives in Gulfcrest south of Citronelle.
She said, "If the taxes go up, I guess I'm going to find somewhere else to go."
Patricia Miller lives on Lott Road in the part of west Mobile recently annexed by the City of Mobile.
When asked how she likes annexation in her area, she said, "I think its working out good."

Why would anyone in King’s Branch care what happens to Semmes? They are technically Mobile anyway-look at a mapbook and tell me if you see them in the Semmes zip code. If they want to be a part of the city great-but the people of Semmes do not.

I hate that I am missing the meeting tonight, but could not be helped. Keep me posted, and I am behind the community of Semmes 100%!

First of all, Master Jones is full of sh#@! Look at a map book, the Semmes area starts east of Schillingers. He can have the 36618 zip code, but leave our 36575 one alone. That includes our Wal-mart. The Welcome to Semmes sign was placed by the Semmes Woman’s Club, and was dictated by what the Alabama Department of Transportation would allow. Note, there is a second sign coming into Semmes close to Semmes Middle School-also placed by the Semmes Woman’s Club and dictated by the ADOT. Might want to do your homework Sammy boy. We Semmes folks are ready to battle you EVERY step of the way on this!

Here is a link to a story about Montgomery fighting with a smaller community over a big box store.  It might help with the Semmes issue

The act, passed by the Alabama Legislature and effective on May 29, 2008, validates all municipal incorporations that happened after 1990.

The act reads in part:

(b)...in all cases in which there has been after the year 1990, an attempt to organize the inhabitants of any territory as a municipal corporation under the laws of this state and the judge of probate of the county in which the territory is situated has entered an order that the inhabitants of the territory are incorporated as a town or city…, the incorporation is hear by validated ab initio, and any extensions or alterations of the corporate limits of the municipality which occurred prior to the effective date of the act…are also validated ab intio and the territory is confirmed as part of the corporate limits of the municipality…

I would love to hear what will be said, but can’t make it tonight.
. I went to the U.S. Census Bureau site earlier and plugged in some criteria for a thematic map of the two areas.  It looked like the deck was being stacked on this deal to me.  I don’t fully understand how to read the data, so you Semmes people might want to have someone knowledgeable of such things to take a look.
. If a subdivision wants to become part of the city, I have no problem with that.  However, it looks like the city found some places that are pro annexation and used a magic wand to connect them to the retail, commercial and industrial areas they really wanted.  How can they draw lines like that?  Bypass 12 houses and then zig zag off course to grab one house?

Not me. I live in Saraland and we fought this battle a good while back. We didn’t get the land to the east and north of us but I think we brought all thoughts of expansion in this direction to a halt. Good luck JUDYH and to the others in the area affected.

Anyone from the Tillman Corner/Theodore area going to the meeting in Semmes tonight at MGM High School?  Just wondering.  Not only will there be info on the incorporation of Semmes as a city, there will also be discussions on Mobile’s annexation proposals.

That’s probably the whole purpose, to pull in as much taxes from businesses and commercial properties or what might be used for commercial property in the future, as possible. They are needing control of more land for some future projects for the city and as mentioned before Public housing is one. Uncle Sam is casting a wide net and a selective one.

I roughly traced the annex lines for the Semmes and Tillman"s Corner/Theodore area and then merged them with google earth screen shots.  That is the craziest bunch of stuff I have ever seen!  The lines go zig zagging along 98 pulling in businesses and going out of the way to avoid residential areas.  Until they get closer to Prichard and then they pick up a few homes and a whole lot of open land.
. They did the same in Tillman’s Corner.  They looped in Wal Mart and Lowe’s but even drew a little bubble to exclude what looks like Mobile Lumber.  Then they zig zag down 90 and loop up a few residences off Bellingrath Road in Theodore.  Most of what they have included are businesses and open land.
. How can this even be legal?

I’d love to see our community become independent, kind of like Saraland has. We have the best schools, a great family based community and we deserve better than what we are getting from the school system. We definitely deserve better than what the city has to offer-which is NOTHING! I would like to see Semmes, Wilmer,Georgetown, and possibly Tanner Williams join forces.
