Mobile Attorney Henry Brewster was among those watching the speech at a viewing party.
Brewster said, "I think he's doing what Americans have been asking for, and that's to get the specifics of the plan and to set to rest the wild claims that have been made about it. He's setting the record straight."
Mobile County Republican Party Executive Terry Lathan watched the President's speech from her home.
Lathan said, "What I saw was basically the same thing he's been saying. He endorsed the government mandate. He endorsed something he called 'chipping in,' which is a code work for taxes."
When asked about a government or public option for people who need insurance, Brewster said, "I think it will actually lower insurance costs for everybody. The VA is a government plan. Even Congress's insurance plan is a public option."
Lathan said, "America is a great nation and we should absolutely take care of them, but there is a difference between reform and reassembling one-sixth of your economy."
