DAPHNE, Alabama - Daphne Utilities wasn't messing around when they said pay up or pay the price. They made good on that promise Wednesday when they shut off sewer service to three delinquent customers in the Park City neighborhood. Daphne Utilities General Manager, Rob McElroy, says they gave customers every opportunity to get on a payment plan for years of back payments. Originally, there were 65 customers owing around 85-thousand dollars. But, that number was down to three customers owing about 10-grand as of Wednesday, "we have made every effort for somebody to come in and do the right thing and avoid this. The only people that we're addressing now are the people that absolutely refuse every overture to come in and just do the right thing," said McElroy. The Baldwin County Health Department will get a list of the homes where the sewer was cut off. A supervisor says they will be investigating whether or not there is a public health threat. Homeowners could face legal action if the problem is not corrected and there is a health threat.

Krotolon, The utility manager stated.

“we have made every effort for somebody to come in and do the right thing and avoid this. The only people that we’re addressing now are the people that absolutely refuse every overture to come in and just do the right thing,” said McElroy.

Just because you are old does not mean you do not have to maintain your home if you live in a city neighborhood.  If the old man has family or someone to watch out for him, they have failed him.  As you seem to know of him, why didn’t you try to help him work out a plan with the utility?

If it is a matter of finances, why didn’t he talk with the utility company when they contacted him many times prior to this action.  This was a last resort for the company.

Now, because he ignored the problem until the point of disconnect, it becomes a matter for the Board of Health.  Without sewage, he is a health threat to the neighborhood and the Board of Health could make him leave his home.

You mention a $2000 reconnect fee.  More than likely, it will be a $2000 reconnect fee + the amount he was in arrears.

Yes, this is a sad situation, but caused by his choice not to communicate with the utility.  Now in the Board of Health hands it will not get better as they have to protect the health of the neighborhood.  By not having sewage, he will probably have to move.

It is a sad situation, but it was a choice.

Not all of these people are deadbeats SHELTIDAD. I seen where there was a 92 year old man who had his service taken away. i don’t know who you are, but anyone who thinks that is right is just ridiculous.

I hope someone can help his man and I would like to know how myself, there is a 2000 dollar reconnect fee for his service. i don’t know anyone who can just come up with that, especially a 92 year old man who I am sure is on a fixed income. He is probably exempt if they look into it further. People need to think before they group all these people into one.

It is unbelievable to me that someone thinks this man should end up losing his home at 92 years old. Just unbelievable!

It’s a sticky situation.  Within the city’s corporate city limits, septic tanks are prohibited.  The only option is sewer and Daphne Utilities is the only company offering sewer service.  Customers within the City limits and do not have sewer will present a public health hazard.  This creates a difficult situation.  Bottom line is that the customers should have never gotten so far behind on their sewer bill.  Sounds to me like Daphne Utilities made every reasonable attempt to negotiate with these customers and the customers left them no choice.  Now they will have to deal with the Board of HEalth and they will not be near as nice as Daphne Utilities has been.

excatly rolltide! and Mobile utilities isnt as expensive as Baldwin county believe it or not, a friend of mine didnt want this service but it was forced on her, they practically dug up her septic tank themselves, and she had no choice but to pay for the service which is very expensive!!!! and alot of people tried to boycott it but are now having to pay up

This really has nothing to do with the City.  Daphne Utilities is individually owned and operated.  It is not a municipality owned Utility.

This probably wouldn’t be allowed to happen in Mobile - I think that the city leaders have too many favorites in the area.  Somebody in the leadership would scream racism, even if it was actually the fault of the people that got their utilities cut off.  Too bad everybody can’t be treated the same. JMO

Finally!  A company holds the deadbeats accountable for their choices.

Guess they were holding out thinking the company would back down and go away, as often happens.

If 62 customers were willing to make arrangements to pay back $85,000 due, then the 3 holdout deadbeats have no excuse for not working out a plan with the company.
