The tackling continues over the county's lease on Jemison's Bait and Tackle Shop on Dauphin Island Parkway.

Jemison's lease expires in 4 years but Harry Jemison is being told to get off the property just South of Alabama Port by October. The shop has been there since the 1980's.

The county wants to build public boat ramps and a fishing pier. Commissioner Mike Dean says the spot where the bait shop is now will be turned into a parking lot.

Jemison has a growing list of supporters who believe the bait shop should get to stay. Many of them showed up at Government Plaza to ask the commissioners to reconsider.

Dean says Jemison knew this time would come. "I'm not a picking on Mr. Jemison. Eight year ago, saying look Harry I will renew your lease with a 90 day exit clause. Instead of doing that we give him 9 months and we might even give him more."

The county is considering giving Jemison an extension on that October deadline.

Mobile County will use 2 million in grant money to improve the waterfront. That money comes from oil and gas taxes and must be spent on improving coastal areas that don't include private businesses.

Maybe the state, and county should consider how to use this land to IMPROVE the bay. All I see is unrestricted run-off of dripping oil and antifreeze from trucks and vehicles. It won’t matter if there is access if the bay has been choked of all oxygen.

One reason they don’t develop the bay is because it is a cesspool from all the sewer spills and chemicals that have been poured into it.Check the state status a lot of the tributaries are not even rated for swimming.Every time it rains there are sewer spills.oyster bars closed and no swimming alerts issued for Fairhope pier,Isn’t the bay homogeneous?

The county owns ALOT of land in that area that could be used for this grant money. The only reason I see for them using Jemisons’ particular area is that it’s already partially ready for development. They would have to spend alot more money to prepare the other land they own. As BamaBob likes to say…“follow the money”.

When they put the pier up they will probably charge to fish on it and to launch your boat.

I haven’t been to the island in a while last trip the pier was a sandbar. not worth the price of admittance.Cost of saltwater license getting out of site. You used to fish saltwater for free now it’s a rip off. They need to leave well enough alone .Instead of telling our grandchildren how it used to be we could show them. The county and the state are out of control. Why Mike Dean why that That spit of land is long enough to share.

You can get bait at Ship & Shore, but the selection is poor and it’s ON the island.

Only Jemisons and Cedar point pier sell fresh bait. Only problem with the Cedar Point Pier shop is that the parking lot gets to congested for boaters to stop by with their boats in tow.

Is there any other bait place between Alabama Port and Jemison’s?

This is such an outrage. We really should consider having some sort of rally or protest….I know I didn’t vote for this to happen!

This whole thing reeks of a money-making scheme by the county commissioners and the city of Mobile.  No doubt someone is seeing dollar signs here and want to dress up the area for tourists (not the local people, really, as they are telling everyone) and probably have undisclosed plans to add things like concession stands, ticket/admission booths, and possibly even their own bait and tackle shop.  All of this would be geared toward bilking the tourists and public of their money.  Why doesn’t the city buy land somewhere near downtown Mobile and build a public beach that rivals Gulf Shores?  I’m sure that they are envious of all of the tourists that go there instead of coming to Mobile to see an old battleship and fort. Building a boat ramp and pier and paving a parking lot will hardly bring in tourists like they might think. But a nice beach would bring in lots of local people as well as tourists.  A waterpark like Six Flags would be a plus, too.
