Mobile County is exploring new ways of reaching out to families before kids get into trouble.
In a meeting recently with the WKRG News 5 Crime Solutions Task Force, Judge Naman said Mobile County is exploring new ways of reaching out to families before kids get into trouble. But, local pastors have already implemented a curriculum the judge is very impressed with, Effective Black Parenting.
Tande Wilkerson is a graduate of the program. She took classes at Aimwell Baptist Church in Mobile. She says what she learned has helped to enhance an already wonderful relationship she has with her seven year old son, Wayne.
"I don't yell at him, Wayne do this..or Wayne, I don't yell as much. I now know how to talk to him and he works better with me talking to him versus me yelling at him", says Wilkerson.
Effective Black Parenting is a 15 week skill building program. It teaches adults how to better communicate with African American Children.
"it's a culture difference..where in a caucasian family it's usually time out. But, in an African American family, it's I'm fixing to get this belt..and tear you behind up", says Sherman Tate, another graduate of the Effective Black Parenting program.
The program looks at the history of physical discipline in the black culture going back to the days of slavery, and it explores other positive forms of discipline.
Effective praise, they teach you not to praise the child but, praise the child's behavior. You know like having his pants pulled up shirt tucked in. Man you look real nice today. Oh, I see you got your books in your hand..that's good", says Tate.
"We want our children to have high self esteem. We want them to have self discipline. Then the parents got to have it. The children need to see their parent as a person who has themselves under control", says Pastor Michael Jackson with Aimwell Baptist Church. Pastor Jackson uses the curriculum to show his congregation how to model and teach skills to their children. He believes what he and other pastors are doing will make a difference in the community.
"This program is designed to reduce delinquency, drop outs, and drug use and crime and violence. Listen it works, says Pastor Jackson.
Parents who've taken the course say anyone who deals with inner city kids should take the course.
"By taking this class, I think my kids will have an even brighter future than what I had growing up and what I have now", says Tate.
