The Mobile County Public School System has a faster way to get information to parents.Every school has a computerized messenger system.
Principals can now send voice messages, email alerts, and text messages to parents if there's an emergency or they need to know important information involving their child's school.
If something happens, the messenger system can send out alerts within 15 minutes.
"Sometimes we have lock downs because there might be a bank robbery nearby a school. So we lock the kids in because we don't want them out while there's still a bank robber still roaming around. Well, this way we can immediately call the parents, let them know the school is in lockdown and why and that their kids are safe. And then we'll let them know in another message when the lock down will be lifted and when they can get their kids. So it's going to serve so many different purposes," said Mobile County Public Schools Spokesperson Nancy Pierce.
There's no need to sign up for the service.
Your contact information is automatically put into the system based on what is on file at your child's school.
If you would like to change it, you will have to go to the school and correct it.
Also, the school messaging system will sent an alert to parents if their child is absent from school.

These are some of the reasons we are homeschooling our two boys. It really bugs me too that we have to take off time just to pick up a report card in person. I can understand a parent teacher conference. And elementary kids are not the ones forging parents signatures. If any one is it would be High Schoolers. I tried it one time. I was busted.

I also noticed that Meadowlake Elem. had their move in night last Thursday from 3pm to 5pm. It did say move in NIGHT on the sign. Then later that evening I passed Griggs Elem. And they were having there move in night at night. 5:30pm to 7:30 pm.

Some of us do not have flexible hours and that makes it very hard to take time off. When we do it should by used for Honor roll assemblies and conferences.

well what job do you have that lets you leave work for an hour???..please tell us!!!! we want that job!!!!!

You must not be familiar with the requirements of the MCPSS. Teachers must indeed use STI. Its the datacenter of the school. Have you ever received a report card, in any fashion? Have you ever received a progress report? Have you ever had a school employee call you? All that originates in STI. There may indeed be a delay in the teachers posting, and there is typically a delay in the teacher posting to STI and the internet version showing it, but teachers MUST post in STI. No questions!

About Burns making you come to the school to pick up the report card: this happens typically for one of two reasons. 1) There is an abnormal rate of student forgeries, or report cards that don’t actually make it home, or 2) the school is using the report card pickup as a parent/teacher conference vehicle, in accordance with NCLB and/or the school’s APE, where they need 100% of students to have X number of parent/teacher conferences. But, if you can’t find an hour to come to school, you need a new job!

You must not be familiar with Burns. While it is required, there is no system oversight to follow up on compliance.  They never post.  Also, since we are talking about report cards, at one point last year they refused to send report cards home, requiring parents to abandon or jeopardize their jobs to get this information.  Even after calling and making a personal request, they refused to send the report card home with the child.

Teachers have to post grades to STI.  That is how report cards are printed.

How can anyone expect Cranford Burns to post an emergency when they won’t even post grades or homework assignments on the STI site?  Is this another example of money being spent on technology that will never be used?
