A horrible discovery in the Eight Mile area.
Mobile County Animal Control officials said they broke up a suspected dog fighting operation at 5641 Marshall Road on Tuesday.
They said they found more than two dozen dogs and what appeared to be a dog fighting pit.
And, when Mobile County Sheriff's Deputies arrived on the scene, they said they arrested a man for marijuana possession.
Mobile County Animal Control officials said they impounded 27 fighting dogs after an anonymous tip.
They said all of the dogs were pit bulls and pit bull mixes and officers discovered some were in bad shape.
Mobile County Humane Officer Carmelo Miranda said, "They found 3 dogs injured, one that was half-dead, barely alive, a treadmill that they use for dog fighting, and about 26 other dogs that were tied up to trees and in barrels in the woods."
Miranda also said the dog that was found half-dead, later died.
He said, "The dog does appear that he's been a dog fight recently. He bled out, bled to death. The other dogs we have had wounds, (like) swollen faces, missing eyes."
No animal abuse charges were filed Tuesday, but when sheriff's deputies said they arrived on the scene, they arrested James Hancock for marijuana possession.
Deputies said they found nine marijuana plants growing on the property.
The dogs were brought to the Mobile County Animal Shelter, but that is causing another problem.
It concerns those dogs at the shelter waiting to be adopted.
Mobile County Spokesperson Nancy Johnson said, "We are required by law to hold these (impounded) dogs for the next 20 days at least, and so we're hoping we can adopt out the dogs who are here or they're in jeopardy of being euthanized."
The shelter is located at 7665 Howells Ferry Road.

Write and call your county commissioners, as well as your state legislators and urge them to afford animals the right to live free of terror, pain and exploitation by human hands. The horrendous conditions at the Prichard Animal Shelter should be addressed by the citizens of the entire county, IF Prichard officials won’t take care of the animals for a few days before they kill them, they don’t need to be in office, including the Police Chief. He needs to arrest himself, since he is the chief law enforcement officer of Prichard, as well as responsible, as he stated, for the animal shelter. WKRG has not covered the story on the rotting body of a dog discovered by witnesses at Prichard Animal Shelter, or the unsanitary, unfit conditions for any creature to endure. Who knows what kind of depraved human beings work there, if this is the type of treatment they extend these vulnerable, deserted animals.

zz, Your vision of what you want for animals is just that, a vision. It has been called looking thought rose colored glasses. People that live in the real world are reasonable. Your vision of things are not attainable or realistic. We can do what we can but get a grip. Stop dog fighting when we can sure. Feed and care for all the stray animals? Just not going to happen.

A long way from utopia - our government funded animal shelters/pounds. I assure you there are no rose colored glasses worn by animal advocates, but we do have the right to hope and work for a better system of caring for the homeless, defenseless animals in our world. Acceptance of our present system is out of the question for me, and for a great deal of people, and growing. Of course, I am used to statements such as yours, but do feel that education and awareness of the true dark picture of “what we do” to innocent creatures of our planet, will spur interest and compassionate acts to right this wrong. Hoping for that does not automatically adorn my eyes with rose colored glasses - That would be nice, but facts are what we deal with, and there is no color at all there, only darkness. Yeah, give me some of those rose colored glasses if you have an extra.

ZZ Get a grip. Big difference between letting the animal die in a pen from lack of food, water, care and putting them down. Rose-colored glasses and utopia are a state of mind. A little time in Ethiopia might do you fine. I put you in the same place as the dog fighters. On the extreme end of things. one with compassion, one with out.

I agree as well..however, I can understand why they have to euthanize a lot of these animals. There are tons and tons of animals that are “wild” not counting pets that have been lost and never reclaimed. I know someone who lives near me, matter of fact two who have tons of cats…the man has possibly ten or more that roam around his place, porch and yards. They get into everyones trash and climb on our cars. The other person has a least five of her own that do the same thing. So in the early morning hours its nothing to see 15-20 of them all in the same place.  This is just ridiculous to keep letting the multiply!!! Im no cat lover at all, and would not harm one, however, I think there should be a law on how many animals we own. Espically in the city limits where neighbors are only a few steps away. These cats don’t seem to be abused, but gezz its not fair to the nieghbors to have to deal with someone else’s pets.  We own one dog who remains in the fence day around other than when were out letting our son play and were out with the both of them. Please get your animals fixed….

Alabama needs to change their laws regarding animals.  Its very heart breaking reading these stories and I agree totally with the jukezz.

Horrible situation - all around. Bottom line - homeless, abused, injured and discarded animals have NO WHERE to go, no one to turn to. “Safe” at the shelter. Not hardly. Dogs will be euthanized (killed) to make room for these poor dogs, who no doubt, will have little chance for life after the “case” is decided. Millions of dogs and cats are killed every year in pounds all over USA, and no one makes a peep of complaint.
Curious, why this news station has not covered the exposure of the deplorable conditions, and the dead rotting dog at Prichard Animal Shelter recently. There is no law of protection for the animals in shelters/pounds, and no rescue unless more people adopt. Our laws afford no oversight or standards for animal pounds, with the exception of the killing policies and certification of the executioner by the State of Alabama. Shame on us, our officials for failing the needy animals, who are treated as trash - disposable. Obviously, this is how our elected officials consider Mans Best Friend - the last item on their lofty agenda.
