A Bayou La Batre police officer who was injured his last day on the force is now out of the hospital.

Tim Byrd was injured Sunday after inhaling fumes at Bryant Products, a seafood shop on Tram Avenue. Police believe the leak was caused by a faulty valve. Byrd was on patrol when he discovered the leak around 5:00 a.m. Police then issued an order to nearby residents to stay inside until the leak was contained and air quality tests determined it was okay to go outside.

Byrd was released from USA Medical Center around 12 noon.

News 5's Kimberly Curth is talking with Byrd's mother. She'll have the latest on this story tonight on News 5 at 5:00 and 6:00.
