GULF SHORES, Alabama -
The Gulf Shores Fire Department has been busy responding to dozens of heat-related emergencies at the 38th Annual National Shrimp Festival.
On Thursday, crews treated more than 20 people suffering heat-related illnesses.

"An October heatwave is definitely something rare for the Gulf Coast, but not unheard of, we want to stress to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks," says Gulf Shores firefighter Brian McMahon. "A lot of our out of town vendors and guests aren't used to this heat."

Just about everyone at the festival carried a fan and a bottle of water to help beat the heat. Frozen lemonade stands set up throughout the festival grounds were very popular.

On Friday, temperatures reached the 90's along the beach with a heat index approaching 100 degrees. Firefighters have a first-aid station and tent located at the main entrance of the Shrimp Festival near the Hang-out.

A little relief could be on the way this weekend thanks to an approaching cold front.

The 38th Annual National Shrimp Festival runs through Sunday.

Catfish place sounds good.  We didn’t even eat the vendor food.  Went to the Oyster House down there and it was pretty darn good.

Okie dokie then. I’ll give you a pass on that one, since I admitted it too….just be nice in future comments.wink

Well, yeah…..  lol

Dang!! I missed another shrimp festival but I consoled my self by going to the junction and getting their special of the day,SURF AND TURF.The jumbo shrimp were good and the steak was a little thin but all was good and the hush puppies and cheese sause wrapped it all up nicely.I’m getting hungry thinking about it again. The humidity has been so high that the only way it could get any higher I believe would be for it to be raining all the time.I can go outside and work an hour or two and be drenched in sweat and have to take a shower and change clothes.I’m another one who doesn’t like crowds,I rack that up as age related though, but I manage to navigate thru the walmarts with out too much trouble.I imagine i was amply represented by my son and one grand son at the festival though. Those two could put a shrimp boat working over time to keep up with their eating shrimp.grin

So does that make you an oddball too, BB?lol

Welllllll….... I was standing in the middle of that crowd Friday night and remembered I don’t even like to go to Walmart because all the people get on my nerves. lol

It used to be a nice family sort of thing to do, but it has gotten too crowded and it used to have cool, crisp fall weather.

Then I guess I’m an oddball with you Razorsharp.lol My idea of fun isn’t amongst a huge crowd. I don’t even go shopping the day after Thanksgiving-I’d rather pay more than suffer through the throngs!lol

It just does not seem very appealing to me. The heat, the ridiculous crowds, traffic, overpriced food and trinkets, rude people, higher risk of food poisoning…even the smell. (mostly from people who don’t have good hygiene)I just don’t see the attraction myself. Then again, that is just my opinion. I guess I am just an oddball because I don’t like Bayfest or Mardi Gras either for those very reasons.

I think being on a slab of asphalt shoulder to shoulder with thousands of people and all the vendors with hot oil sizzling every five feet, it accentuates the heat and humidity.  It was HOT down there!

It was too hot and too crowded!  Rained late Friday night or very early Saturday morning, but the sun was out most of the time.  This is the second year the heat has been too much to stand.  What happened?
