Northrop Grumman President Wes Bush says his company is still focused on bringing the tanker contract here. The Air Force originally awarded the 40-billion dollar contract to Northrop Grumman and EADS in February, but a Boeing protest and Congressional hearings put it on hold. Bush says he's not sure if they'll pick up where they left off or start over. Either way they want to move forward now and not wait.

“Issue an amended request for proposal in early 2009 and get on with it,” says Bush. He says Robert Gates continued presence as secretary of defense bodes well for them. He's not worried about the new president's hometown ties to Boeing.

“I think he has been very clear that he sees his role as the president elect of the United States not as Chicago or Illinois,” says Bush. Other officials in attendance felt reassured by the visit.

“Very important to say to the community that this project is ongoing, that Northrop and EADS are serious about moving forward,” says former Congressman Jack Edwards. Bush says they'll still provide the tanker with the best cost and capabilities.
