Mobile County has a new and much larger animal shelter.

The ribbon cutting happened Tuesday morning at the new facility on Howells Ferry Road in West Mobile. The old animal shelter was leased from the City of Prichard and could only hold 100 animals.

The new $2 million shelter is over 10,000 square feet and can hold 300 animals.

"We have been trying to get this facility built since (Hurricane) Katrina," said Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean "We're very excited today. We have the state of the art animal shelter for the whole Mobile County."

The county also launched a new website fto go along with it's new animal shelter. At mobilecountyanimals.com, you can see pictures of pets ready for adoption.

I thank you all for the info, and the advice. I have a chihuahua that I adopted after Katrina because no one else wanted him, I’m from Bayou La Batre, and left there after the storm. I needed companionship so I took him. The cat was a baby when i got her, she was abandoned. I did well keeping her inside for 2 years, but accidents do happen. I didn’t want to deal with babies and I do believe in spaying them, but I guess I’ve been calling the wrong Vets.
I know some people think that animals aren’t worth it but I do, and God must think a lot of them since he created them.
and as far as homeless people go…I have met quit a few homeless people, and tried to help them
but some of them are homeless by choice. They would rather spend their money on drugs and alcohol, so I would rather feed a hundred cats and dogs than buy 1 bottle of beer or whiskey, or buy an addict a fix.
The ones who are truly homeless because of circumstances beyond their control, I do feel compassion for though.

I know I am a minority. I so agree with wait4me. I just believe people are more important than animals. I am an animal lover I have four dogs all spayed four cats all spayed. They lived inside our fence. If you cannot afford an animal don’t get one.One of my neighbors volenteers for ARF, she has between seven to fifteen dogs inside her house. ARF pays for all the food. When she lets them out they fight, like crazy. Even attacking another neighbors dog through the fence.Domestic animals are a food source in several places in the world where food is limited. Insects are too. If we were as hungry as them we probably would not have a problem with it. I think that money could have been used for more practical reasons. Food banks, homeless shelters, uniforms for school children who cannot afford them. Meals on wheels for our elderly, help with the electric bill for the elder. So many things that can be done for living breathing people. Not just a bunch of animals no one wants, waiting to die

You can get some of the immunizations at many of the feed stores in outlying areas. I believe the 4 in 1 was about $4. The rabies is REQUIRED when you own pets. B&B Petstop regularly has Rabies clinics, $8. Frontline can be purchased in a largest vial for dogs and divided into the appropriate dose for the wghts of your cats.

While you are online, you might research the immunizations and figure out which ones you can give yourself. Your pets deserve to at least be protected if they are going to wander. With your MEDICAID card, you have options for lowcost spaying and neutering. Please fix your critters and stop littering.

BTW, the new SHELTER facilities are beautiful. The staff was terrific when I came in looking for a lost cat. Kudos to the staff and their wonderful service.

Yeah, on Medicaid it’s only $5 to have a cat spayed, up to five cats a year, if I’m not mistaken.

Quit being part of the problem…I mean for real. You name the time and the vet, and I’ll meet you there with $5.

Maybe I sound crass, but if you couldn’t afford to have your cat fixed then why would you let it outside?? Duh!  Also, you state you’re on Medicaid, there is a program in Alabama that you can get your animals fixed for hardly anything.  There is the Discout Spay & Neuter on Moffett near I-65 that will do it & the animals do not need their shots.

This is my first time on the site for animal shelters. I’m looking for some place that will take my cats. I had 1 cat in 2007, when I moved to Creola. All of a sudden it has grown to 20. all because ....every time I have tried to have my cat spayed, I’m told that I also have to pay for bathing, grooming, de-fleaing, shots, and a complete physical. I’m on medicaid and want to have the original cat fixed, but can’t afford all the other things they want to charge. It will cost close to $100.00 to do all this, if not more. I now have 4 litters of kittens between the ages of 1&1/2 weeks to 2 months in age. I didn’t even have a male cat at all.
At any rate…I’m going to be going through chemotherapy for liver cancer and am moving in with my sister so that she can help me.The problem is, they don’t allow pets at all.
Can anyone help me please?

The Animal shelter is a good thing,it put people to work in construction while building the facility and it still has permanent employees working there. Our cities waste a lot of money for items that are a lot less deserving than the Animal Shelter,“Like a Large Moon Pie”.

Nope

wait4me, are you homeless?

Bless your heart Rosepetal, here is a post of yours from the food stamp story:
“i am really sorry some teachers are losing their jobs, but so are some of the students parents and a hungry child can not learn. i sent my child to a private school. i resent that 47% of my property tax goes to public education. i will never resent any amount to feed a family.”
Kind of proves my point, EVERYBODY feels sorry for the homeless and believe they need assistance.  I still believe the money could have been better spent to help our community and fellow man.  In these times finding ways to improve the economy and bringing jobs to the area should be of the upmost importance to our elected officials.
