Mobile police have released the name of the woman who was killed killed when an officer collided with her Jeep Cherokee.

Police say officer Van Peterson was "responding to a complaint" Monday night when he collided with 54-year-old Patricia Smith near the intersection of Government Boulevard and Pleasant Valley Road.

Smith's Jeep Cherokee rolled over and landed on its roof. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Peterson was transported to the USA Medical Center with minor injuries.

The crash is under investigation by MPD's Traffic Accident Investigation Unit and Internal Affairs. When asked by News 5 whether Peterson had his lights and siren on at the time of the crash, police would not comment.

The sad part is noone will ever really no what happened, maybe the witness can shed some light on the whole wreck? Everyone needs to slow down and like the other person said take that cell phone and text message out of your hand and drive!!!  It ought to be against the law to have anything in your hand while driving…

The fact remains that “You” are to have your vehicle under control at all times.  Now until we know all of the facts of the accident we will not be able to form a informed judgement as to who is at fault.

Yes officers respond to call all the time without lights and sirens, does that give them special considerations where the rules of the road are concerned, I think not but before we ruin this officers career due to an accident let’s wait and see if he in fact was in control of his vehicle or if the deceased may have not been in control of her vehicle.  Accidents happen people, that’s why they call them accidents, sometimes there is no one to BLAME….

I want to know why you call them “morons.” When there is sonmething that most people would run away from that “moron” police officer is running towards it to keep you and your family safe. How far would you go to help a perfect stranger that just called you a moron? I am certain that if you needed help that “moron” police officer would not think twice about helping you.

DSM71,

So why is it that you ask a police officer “what took you so long to get here?” When you need them. But when they are not coming to help you then you call them a “moron” for trying to help someone in need. What if someone was holding a gun to you or your family or breaking into your house.

NO, I was attending the same function and he passed me like a bat out of he—.  He married my neice.

Let’s all just rush to judgement and assume the officer was at fault. Monday morning quarterbacks who weren’t there yet already know who was at fault. Did you ever think that maybe just maybe an officer doesn’t have his lights and sirens on when he is going fast because he doesn’t want to alert the criminal. An officer was driving like that to a personal function? You know this how? He also stopped to inform you that he can? Sounds made up to me.

The Mobile Police and Mobile County Sheriff’s and all those small surrounding towns think they are almost GOD.

Just maybe you would see that officer if you removed that cell phone and your head from your behind. Oh wait a second, maybe the officer should do the same. Other than a select few, EVERBODY drives that way in Mobile. “Because They Can”! We are now faced with a whole new level of offensive drivers. Shall we call them the “Yes WE Cans”?
It all seems so perfectly “Gangsta”! HA! Put that in your stem and smoke it!

PD would not comment huh?  Well, that’s a dead giveaway.  Those morons drive too fast regardless.  We’ve had to call and complain MANY times about excessive speed down Schillinger Road, with no lights on.  This clown should be charged with vehicular homicide, stripped of his job, and thrown in jail.

They drive entirely too fast even when on a call.  If they don’t have their lights and sirens on, sometimes innocent people don’t see or hear them.  It has happened to me before.  One time an officer was driving like that to a personal function and when I asked him why, his answer was “BECAUSE WE CAN THAT’S WHY”.
