The Mobile Police Department has announced Officer Jimmy Bailey has been named March 2009 Officer of the Month. Bailey has been with MPD for three years and is currently assigned to the 3rd Precinct. He will be honored at a ceremony next week.

In a news release, MPD says Officer Bailey is being recognized for exceptional work last month, including:

"The Third Precinct was experiencing an increase in residential burglaries in on specific area of the jurisdiction. Officer Bailey was tasked with curbing these crimes and he committed to apprehending the suspect by day’s in. He kept his promise and, within two hours, delivered suspect Ray Charles Garrett to detectives. Garrett was arrested and charged with Probation Revocation and Possession of Burglar’s Tools.

Following the arrest of Garrett, another suspect was identified by detectives and, again, Officer Bailey canvassed the area and delivered that suspect within the day. He was latter apprehended during the commission of a burglary.

On March 14, 2009 while working an extra job at Dillard’s Department Store in Colonial Bel-Air Mall, Officer Bailey was informed by store security that someone was suspected of shoplifting. Officer Bailey confronted the subject and recovered more than $1,100 in merchandise and well as unauthorized prescription medication. The suspect was arrested and charged with Theft of Property Second Degree and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Officer Bailey was also responsible for apprehending three fugitives with outstanding warrants. They were charged with numerous crimes including Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle, Rape First Degree, and Receiving Stolen Property Second Degree.

During the month of March, Officer Bailey was responsible for making nine felony and 12 misdemeanor arrests, as well as answering 79 calls for service and backing fellow officers 38 times. His persistent attention to detail and dedication to his job have significantly contributed to the success of the Mobile Police Department’s efforts to combat crime."

Its a shame these officers have to work extra jobs ot make it in this world. When our elected officials vote themselves pay raises every time they feel as if they need more money. great job officer, keep up the great work you have our support.

He is not an elected official. His extra job has to be approved by Lester Hargrove, the Deputy Chief. Whether he was using the city’s police car is unknown. Would you want him to ignore a call for help from a store if he was just shopping there? Then everyone would complain he was not upholding the law while in uniform. Should he just act like he isn’t a cop when a crime is committed in his presence? With the money these poor guys make they have to work side jobs to feed their families. Great job Officer.

“while working an extra job at Dillard’s Department Store in Colonial Bel-Air Mall”

can someone tell me how thats not using his job for personal gain. no doubt he was using the city car and uniform while making money for himself at the store.

Is that MPD news release verbatim?  Does anyone proofread such things before release?  *argh*
