Mobile's Police Chief says one of his officer was wrong to hit a suspect in the face. The incident was caught on video in July and posted on the Youtube website.

Chief Phillip Garrett says the suspect beat his wife, rammed a few police cars and led officers on a chase before the video was shot.

Garrett says Officer Patrick Luckett did everything right until he hit the man. "In investigating this further, it was determined that he in fact struck this man in the face and we're not going to accept that. That's not proper. We're not gonna let that happen. We know it and that officer will be addressed."

Officer Luckett is currently on administrative duty. He will go before a police board in the next two weeks decide if he will face punishment. He admitted that he did strike David Pate.

Pate was arrested and charged with kidnapping, domestic violence and criminal mischief. The chief says that most of Pate's facial injuries are from the earlier crime spree, not from Officer Luckett.

Yes,officer Luckett was wrong for punching the fellow a few times, going by the book that is.I’d probably suspend him for a day or two, with pay and buy him a beer. cheese

Thinking of you, Ofc. Luckett.  The guy shouldn’t have kidnapped his wife and rammed police cruisers.

Coming from a paramedic here I think you did what you had to do. If anything you should of beat the snot out of him and then maybe he will think twice before he ever does it again.
This guy will get out of jail and his wife will probably take him back cause unfurtionatly most do.
Do I think you were in the wrong? NOOOO not at all.
We deffinatly don’t do this work for the money, we do it for the gratifiction of helping and saving lives. And I think that’s what he did.

By the time a few years pass most officers are getting higher rank within the Department or going to a completely different department all together. For the work one has to deal with on a daily basis in Mobile the pay is very low. Not enough to support a family.  Also Mobile has one of the best academies and training programs in this area. Many other departments will send their rookies and cadets here and pay MPD for the training because of the training program that we have here for our LE.

It is nice to see that in this case there are more positive views and comments than negative. I think that the fact that both the Chief and the officer on duty both admitted to what happened says enough that at least they are taking whatever fault there is. Does this mean that what was done was wrong? No in my opinion. This guy was hopped up on drugs and while evading the police had no concern for human life in the process. Like I stated before the fact that the guy did not get the living you know what beat out of him shows control. Many would not be able to control their anger when it came to what this guy did. Does this mean that LE never does anything wrong? Of course not. However, I can guarantee if they reported every arrest and act performed by LE on a daily basis an incident such as this would seem extremely minute. I will always remember how quickly MPD worked to find who killed my aunt. Less than 24 hours. Even though it was right after a storm and there were so many other occurrences going on with stealing, fighting and so on, they were not going to stop until that guy was caught. They continuously help battered women taking them and their kids to safer places. Like caring stated, they usually have younger officers on beat because they are physically more capable of handling the everyday drama of being on patrol. Also the fact that being on beat does not pay a lot is another reason why younger officers are on patrol.

I think that some people need a day in the law enforcement or their loved one come home beat up by a thug.  Policemen are the most under paid profession that I know of to be in such danger every day of their life.  I think that today the policemen are getting a bad rap when it is not deserving.  Why do we support the criminals and not support our policemen who are trying to protect the innocent.  Wondering why so many young guys are in uniform.  Think about the embarrashment that the policemen are being put through and how they feel.  There are not many older guys that could take on the criminals and come out alive. Apparently by the grace of GOD some of us have not been subjected to beatings and criminal life but if I had I would certainly want someone to do whatever it took to control the other party. I was married to an officer for many years and I know how it feels to worry every time that he walks out of the home in uniform till he makes it back home. We need to support our policemen and realize that we do not hear the whole story in most all cases that we see on the news and also if we knew about all the crime and situations that the officers deal with daily we would probably be afraid to walk out of our doors.
Pray for our country!

Chief Garrett: Officer Was Wrong
No not at all!!!  Pate needed to be hit for what he did to this women.  Now he knows what it is like to be beat on.
How could anyone take up for this thug?
Officer Patrick Luckett thank you !

I agree with SoYouWillKnow 100%.  The police have no right to “punish” a suspect, regardless of what they did.  It’s not their job to convict and punish.  It’s their job to subdue and apprehend, and they can’t use force beyond what was necessary.  I can’t tell what happened from the video, but it “looks like” the guy was down with four men there to physically restrain him.  I see no cause whatsoever for him to be hit in the face.  That is unacceptable.

If the guy was still fighting back when he was struck, then I think the officer should be corrected and instructed in proper procedure.  If the guy was already subdued, the punishment should be MUCH harsher.  Hopefully there is a dash cam or something with a better angle.  If the guy was still fighting to the extent that the cop’s life was in danger and he had to defend himself, why are the other guys just standing there?

Yes, it’s a hard job.  Yes, cops are heroes.  But they are also held to higher standards than the rest of us.  If they can’t control adrenaline and emotions, they are in the wrong profession.

I do not think age or years on the force would have anything to do with “control”. Which in my opinion this one showed some by not actually beating the you know what out of him. A lot of the times the officers that are newer to the force are usually up on their game. I only say this because they know they have to prove themselves to the veterans. You have to earn you respect on the force. If he was on the force for 4 years already than he definitely is not new. Possibly as even trained some newer ones.

Ill say this….I saw that piece garbages mug shot and he certainly didnt look like he was BEAT by any stretch…especially in the face…25 years ago he would have really got whacked. This country is going down the toilet…one day at a time…......sometimes…people just need to have their butts kicked.
