Authorities arrested Lam Luong Tuesday night.
District Attorney John Tyson identified the victims as three year old Ryan Phan, two year old Hannah Luong, one year old Lindsey Luong and four month old Danny Luong.
Authorities led Luong from Bayou La Batre Police Headquarters to a waiting sheriff's deputy car shortly before 9:30 Tuesday night.
Luong was taken first to a hospital for tests before being brought to Metro Jail.
Tyson said, "I can't get into the specifics about what he (Luong) said, if he said anything. What I don't mind saying though, is that we have probable cause to believe that he's committed a capital murder involving the death of all four of his children."
Authorities did say the investigation started as a result of a missing persons report in Bayou la Batre.
Tyson also acknowledged a search was going on in the waters off Dauphin Island Tuesday evening but didn't say how that might be related to the case.
He said, "We do not want to get into further details, though I don't think its lost on anyone that the sheriff's flotilla and others are busy searching the waters in and around Dauphin Island between Dauphin Island and Cedar Point."
Authorities later suspended the search because of fog and bad weather.
Chad Tucker with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office said, "We have about four boats out tonight, but tomorrow morning we expect to have as many as four different agencies assisting along with helicopters and we'll have every boat that we have out tomorrow."
Lt. Richard Cayton is in charge of the Mobile County Sheriff's Flotilla.
He said, "We'll be back first thing in the morning. We'll have a command post set up here at the bottom of the bridge, and the sheriff's department is going to try to do all we can to help the situation or recover what we can."
Bayou La Batre Police say Loung has a criminal record.
They say he was charged in Biloxi with possession of cocaine.
Authorities ask anyone who saw something suspicious along Highway 193 on Dauphin Island on Monday to call them.
Tyson said, "We are certainly interested in motive. We are interested in facts, details of what might have happened. We're interested in anything that anybody thinks that they know that might help us understand this crime."
