Big changes may be coming to Mobile's skyline. From apartments and shops being built at the Civic Center to a riverwalk along Mobile's waterfront, those are just a few ideas in the City of Mobile's new master plan that was unveiled Monday. Some other changes you might see are: revitalized neighborhoods including the M.L.K. Avenue area where theatres, restaurants, and shops may be built or turning the closed landfill on Hickory Street into a sports complex. The city spent more than 300-thousand in taxpayer dollars to hire a planning firm and project manager to put the plan together. We're told it was developed through research and public input. The master plan must go before the city's planning commission and council before it can move forward.

lol did you see the lady wearing the obama tshirt?
we are already spreading the wealth.

I noticed that WKRG dropped this article shortly after my recent comment.  I think that more people need to be aware of the changes that Mobile plans to make downtown and in the immediate area downtown.

I bet this *Plan for Mobile* was the real reason that Sam Jones tried so hard to get those areas annexed into Mobile.  The true reason for the annexation was probably not to help the neighborhoods with improvements, but to get financing for his pet projects within downtown Mobile itself.  People predicted that those people in the newly incorporated areas would see very little for their tax increases, and I guess this is a very good reason to back up that reasoning.  Instead, some *special* neighborhoods already in the City of Mobile’s downtown will see improvements and their taxes will not go up. This annexation was just a gimmick to trick people into joining Mobile so that the people already in Mobile would not have to fund the downtown improvements. Of course, the city will deny this. The future annexation areas will probably fund downtown as well.

who cares about a river walk? what are they going to see? a sports complex? what about doing something in those areas just incorporated? makes no sense. they need to take the receipt with them and get that $300 grand back. what about a zoo,  6 flags? developers would be paying you not you paying a planning firm. i like the aquarium idea. for 300 grand the downtown employees should have valet parking.

That’s nice.  In the meantime can we get parking for the employees down there?

I guess this means I will have to change the picture in my office again.  *sigh*

We need more things ” to do” in Mobile. It is nice to have a river walk, resturants and all that, but you can only walk and eat so much. What about an Aquarium, or something to go see. Tourists aren’t going to want to go to the malls that are half dead, and there just isn’t that much to do in Mobile.

I hope that this will benefit more people than just those that go downtown.  The cost of this to the taxpayers doesn’t seem to be justified if they do not benefit directly from the expense they will have to bear. Maybe there are hidden plans to annex more areas to finance the new plan for Mobile’s *downtown*. I hope not!!  We need to know what the city plans to do for the rest of the city, too.  Everyone’s neighborhoods need to benefit from the new plans for Mobile, because tourists don’t just go downtown when they visit.  They like to sitesee and a great many things inside and outside of downtown should be improved and made much better and appealing for these people, or they may not come back to visit after one time.

I hope someone is doing the math?  parking at the civic center? Funds for this project? Does this up property value downtown or lower it? Up scale i hope! Does anyone know how rentals are at the new big building downtown? This is all so far away we will have a new mayor by then and things will change, look at all the proposals for the riverwalk?

I think this would be great. But I hope more roadways are in the works because it’s already congested. LOL
