Danny Weemes spent almost two years in physical therapy after a motorcycle accident in 2004 nearly claimed his life. "I was hit head on and I ended up with nerve damage in both legs and my plexus nerve through my arm and half a femur. So I was in a wheelchair for almost a year and needed some assistance,"Said Weemes. With a trained service dog, Weemes got help around the house, from getting his keys to opening doors. While he got back up on his feet, he thought of a way to give back to the pal that helped make it possible."We had a group of people that met at Langan Park every Sunday morning and we started talking amongst ourselves and had the bright idea that we should start a dog park in Mobile,"Said Weemes.
Weemes called on Mobile City Councilwoman Connie Hudson for help. Hudson is putting together a proposal to put a dog park in place at Medal of Honor Park. If all goes to plan Hudson says the city would clear out four acres in a wooded area of the park and place the dog park there. But Hudson says the park comes at a price. "Our parks and recreation superintendent is estimating this to be between 60 and 65 thousand dollars and the primary cost is the fencing," Said the District 6 Councilwoman. In the meantime, Danny Weemes has organized a fundraiser for the Medal of Honor dog park. It's set for November 1st from 9am until noon at the Performing Arts Pavilion at Langan Park. All proceeds will go to the park. For more information call 251-533-9202.
