Mobile Mayor Sam Jones has cancer and has spent the past 3 weeks in an Arkansas hospital getting treatment.

According to city officials, the mayor was diagnosed with multiple myeloma late last year and only told key city employees. In February, he traveled to Arkansas to start outpatient treatment.

Mayor Jones has a makeshift office at an apartment there. His employees say he's still running the city even though he's hundreds of miles away. City Attorney Larry Wettermark tells us it still feels like the boss is around. "He's quite a force around city hall. We sure have felt that force while he's away. He's been in constant email contact, telephone contact. In many ways, he's put more demands on his staff while away than if he had been physically here."

Mayor Jones decided to go public with his illness after people around town starting asking "Where's the Mayor?"

He's wrapping up the first of three treatments. The Mayor is expected to be back in town next week.

YEA! They like to shake you up every now and then by telling you to buy your pants one pair at a time and not to make any long term investments in the market. LOL

Yeah, we haven’t figured out a way to get out alive yet.  If age and disease doesn’t get us, a bus probably will! lol

I’m a heart attack survivor for several years now and I swear my doctors have a look of surprise every time they see me walk in their offices.  Definitely a life changer, but we just have to play the cards we are dealt and move on.

There was an old fellow and friend years back that had heart problems and it ran in his family! He died eventually from it and his son a couple of years later,a young man.But he always kept a good out look on it.He told me the doctors told him he had TERRA CARDIAC something and the best he could figure was that TERRA meant earth and CARDIAC meant heart so he must have a dirty heart! We got a good laugh out of that.Shore is hard to get out of this earth alive taint it? grin

Luckily, I’ve never had an experience with cancer.  Neither side of my family have been plagued with that disease.  We tend to have heart related problems, like sudden cardiac arrest and brain blowouts.

A cancer diagnosis is definitely a life changing event and an incredible financial drain.  But, they have really come a very long way over the years.  At one time certain types were an immediate death sentence.  That’s not true these days.

Having gone through a cancer treatment in 2000,I can tell you it’s not cheap and having a good option of getting treatment here sure would make it more likely more people locally would survive. They might not have any money left, but if they’re fortunate they’ll be alive and that’s way yonder better than dead in my opinion.grin

It would be interesting to see how far that center has come.  The building was going to be beautiful, but very modern.  They also had plans for some type of open plan that caused more interaction with the experts.  I would love to know the status of that effort.

Doing good as can be inspected, how about your self? I got up early to see what’s going on in the world and sitting here watching the infrared camera outside showing the fog droplets that looks like snow floating around outside. That would be interesting to see a follow up report on the new cancer center wouldn’t it?Mobile is getting big enough to have such a center as they have in B’ham and other cities I believe.

Mornin’ Carl!  Life treating you well?

OH! I forgot to say TOP OF THE MORNING TO YA BAMABOB!

Sounds like a winner to me Bamabob! I for one would like to see how it’s progressing and I bet there are plenty more interested.
