MOBILE, Alabama - How would you spend $33 million? It's a nice question Mobile County School Board members had the pleasure of answering Monday.
The money had to be used for school construction, and most of it is stimulus money.
B.C. Rain High School is getting more than $10.5 million for a total renovation.
Superintendent Dr. Roy Nichols said, "The building was designed with no heat or air conditioning in the halls, and only enough power to power window units in the classrooms and the media center."
The money also includes $2.3 million for a health and fitness wing.
There had been some discussion about building a new B.C. Rain High School, but, at a retreat last week, school board members decided to spread around the money to fix different schools.
School Facilities Manager Thomas Sheffield said at the time, "$23 million doesn't go very far. To build a first class high school would be very challenging to do that with that amount of money.
Another school getting renovated is Scarborough Middle School.
Dr. Nichols said, "Its got a leaky roof. It needs the power upgrades. It has only got window air conditioners. It needs new lighting, new floors, a new paint job."
Other schools like Baker High, Bryant High, and Semmes Middle Schools will get new wings of ten classrooms each.
Dr. Nichols said, "Construction probably won't begin until spring or summer. It'll take perhaps 14 to 18 months."
The board Monday also voted to demolish the old Crichton Elementary School on Spring Hill Avenue.
It hasn't been used in years.
