Customers feel like the rug was ripped out from under them after learning that a popular home decor store shut down.

Mobile Rug and Shade has been a fixture in Mobile since 1937. The original store on Spring Hill Avenue was sold a few years ago and moved to Airport Boulevard in April.

It closed last week and the store's lawyer says the owner is filing for bankruptcy. He says business has been slow. Customers who put deposits on orders can't get anyone to answer the phone and the showroom dark.

Cyndi Chapman put 2000 dollars down on carpet for her nursery. She recognized the name and wanted to get a quality product! "I'm 8 months pregnant. All I care about is I want the nursery to be together. I don't wanna have a baby without a nursery so I was very upset."

We left messages for the owner Devin Schaff but he didn't return our calls. His lawyer says his client is working with customers to get their money back. Cyndi is still waiting for that call.

In the meantime, the Better Business Bureau is building a file against Mobile Rug and Shade.

wish i could get my $ from loadwise logistics whom did the same..went bankrupt and didn’t pay their freight bill…

at least they answered their e-mail….

said to contact their lawyer…

yep like he called me back….hmmm…guess it’s time to call again…

I still say sick the pregnant woman or her husband on him. smile I know that my husband tried to make sure to stay on my good side because them hormones can bring out this alter ego you never knew you had.

Innocent until proven guilty?  The guy has taken a lot of cash from people and not delivered.  We don’t need a court to figure that one out.

This guy’s “reputation” is getting ruined because of his actions not the medias. If he really cared that much about it he would actually want to tell his side of the story and nip the untrue statements in the butt. However, him dipping out the back of the store, avoiding customers and the news. Well that is making him look even more guilty. So if any of you people know him or talk to him you might want to pass that on. He is doing more damage by not doing anything.

Should have bought your rugs from GM.

sounds 787billion + 17 trillion like obama

This had nothing to do with Obama, poor decision making and overspending

I agree with Jack. This is terrible for Mobile Rug and Shade. I had ordered merchandise from the store and they have worked with me so I could get my purchases. Devin is loosing his reputation, his family home, and land that has been in his family for generations. I know from doing business with him that he was never running a scam as stated by the business owner next door or taking money from people with the knowledge that he would not give them what they ordered. People need to give him space and allow the courts to do what they need to do. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

While it is terrible that anyone looses money when a company goes bankrupt it is what it is.  Unfortunately Rug and Shade did not have OBAMA come to his aid with a bail out.  Rusty, if he was making money on springhill he would not have moved.  The relocation was a last effort to save a business.  Actually, the rent on springhill was almost twice the rent on Airport and when you factor in insurance for a strip mall vs a stand alone store he saved a lot of money by moving.

People need to realize that in the type of bankruptcy he is involved in he will loose everything. He will loose his home and his assetts.  When your business relies on an industry such as construction and construction grinds to a halt then something is going to give.  Unfortunately was one of Mobile’s oldest businesses.  Bankruptcy means he is broke.  Bankruptcy courts take over assets and he can not just do away with assetts including refunding money.  The court looks at this as assetts owned by the bank at this point not Mobile Rug and Shade.

Hopefully those of you who want to be critical and judgemental will never find yourself in this situation.

he made a lot of money for a number of years at the springhill location. Moved to the high rent district and look what happens. What a shame did business there myself over the years.
