We collected some voices at the Mobile Public Library West Regional Branch. Here is what some people said:

Sylvia Simpson
“I tore my house up looking for my thriller shirt I wore to my 4th grade field trip to Montgomery Alabama I'm just truly devastated, I love Michael Jackson.”

Jade Hawkins
“Actually did a dance to Thriller in 9th grade we had a whole dance project on it, I loved his music, I’m going to miss him greatly and I cry just about every time I hear his music.”

Brandi Jones
“[He was a] positive influence in the African American community he was a great musical influence on everyone and he will be missed.”

Yeah. It was pretty upsetting to see that the death of Farrah was just played off in the background when she was such a huge part of entertainment today. Of course I was not born or old enough to remember her in her “golden” years, but old or young everyone knew her name and knew what she had accomplished. She fought hard for 3 years trying to beat the cancer and sharing her story with her fans. My prayers are with the family. I did not know much about Ed McMahon, but everyone knew his name and what he was known for with his shows. Again my prayers are with the family.

It is like absolute power, his absolute talent corrupted him and in the end killed him. From great person and musical wonder to financially and emotionally broke pedophile may God have Mercy on his soul.

Um, gone?  That’s the point I was trying to get across.

I agree MJ was not the first African American to have a hit on a pop chart.  Apparently dixiebelle365 is too young to remember some of the other African American greats in the music industry.

Did you mourn Ed McMahon who as a US Marine defended his country as a fighter pilot during World War II and did you mourn the death of an actress who valiently fought for her life?  I bet not.

Having said that, let’s get back to the real news of the day and the problems going on in our beloved country.

I’m all for giving credit where credit is due, and I DO believe that Michael Jackson was one of the most talented musicians of all times!  I grew up on his music and did the Thriller dance many times, myself.  However, Miss Jones is dead wrong.  He was in no way the first African American to have a hit on a pop chart.  There were quite a few that came before him.  Let’s not over-dramatize here.
