The Mobile Police Department is honoring one of it's officers for saving an elderly man's life.

According to police, Admire Gant noticed an elderly man stagger out of the McDonald’s (2692 Government Blvd) on July 13. He recognized the man’s gestures as a sign that he was choking.

According to 75 year old Earsell Stanberry, he was about to lose consciousness when Gant performed the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged a piece of food that was blocking his airway.

Stanberry said he just happened to notice Gant in the parking lot when he walked into the restaurant to get breakfast. So when Stanberry realized he was choking, he knew where to turn for help.

“I might not be here now if he wasn’t there that day,” Stanberry said.

There are so many amazing stories that fall through the cracks of the media. Just the other day there was a call were a woman had been in a diabetic seizure for hours and was not able to get to her 3 month old child that was crying. It took her 4 hours just to get to a phone to call for help. The police got there before any medical personal got there. All the doors were locked and since the woman was in a seizure she could not get to the door. They broke down the door to get to both the mother and the child. The woman was panicked because the child had stopped crying for awhile and was scared it stopped breathing. On top of that had left the 3 month old on her bed. So it could have rolled off at anytime. Thankfully the baby was ok, but the 2 officers had to get the woman situated until EMT got there and they fixed a bottle, feed the baby, changed the baby and had EMT check the infant out. It is not in there job description to go above and beyond. They do not have to perform life saving acts or handle anything other than what the law entails, but they do everyday. Good job Officer Gant. I am sure this is not the first time, or last, that you have went above the call of duty.

a fine example of the training he received and the real practical use of it. congratulations for a job well done.

Great job!  Officer Gant saved this man’s life grin  We need more officers like him.

Good Job Officer Gant!  Thanks to WKRG for reporting positive news about the many things the Mobile Police Department does right.  There is a tendancy to always report the bad as news, but there are many unsung heroes who risk their lives everyday to keep us safe.

Well done Officer Gant.

It IS nice to hear something positive, and thank you to WKRG for reporting it. 99.9% of what goes on in LE IS positive, and it is,imo-much better to focus on the POSITIVES in life, than the negatives. Great job Officer Gant, and to the MPD for providing life-saving training to it’s officers. I am glad Mr. Stanberry is doing good.

omg…they finally post something good about the police…they do good things everyday, we just only hear the negative….i think the media has alot to do with the publics view, or maybe its just the crappy public that hate the police anyway while the rest of us admire them…ill bet those of you who complain wouldnt do their job cause it pays more than drugs and food stamps do.

at least he didn’t taze the old man or arrest him for choking in public, just kidding guys.sounds like this officer’s training saved this man’s life for sure, nice to hear something positive about an officer of MPD for a change.thank you officer Gant for making a difference, keep up the good work.
