to life in prison without parole after he pleaded guilty to killing
his 77-year-old grandmother as she made him something to eat.
Detrice Haggins Jr. pleaded guilty to capital murder Friday in
Mobile County Circuit Court. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors
did not seek the death penalty.
Haggins was accused in the March 29, 2008 shooting death of
77-year-old Sally Culpepper.
Under Alabama law, a jury must still be convened to hear the
evidence and agree that Haggins is guilty because it is a capital
case.
Authorities said Haggins stole jewelry and credit cards from his
grandmother by marriage and drove off in her 2004 Pontiac Grand Am.
