MOBILE, Alabama - It sounds like a story from the TV show "Without a Trace," and its happened in Mobile.
A man and his two sons have been missing for more than a month.
Mobile Police have now joined the search.
Michael Nichols is looking for his 33 year old son, also named Michael, and his two grandchildren, 9 year old Joshua Nichols and 13 year old Ryan.
He said the last time he saw his son was August 9th in the 2500 block of Riverside Drive.
Michael Nichols said, "I was reading the paper, sitting in the living room, and he came up and hugged my neck and said, 'Love you, we'll see you later,' and that was it. Ain't seen him since."
Nichols said his son has custody of Joshua and Ryan and there was no reason for him to leave the area.
And Nichols said after talking to people at his son's workplace, the mystery deepened.
He said his son worked at Millard Refrigerated Services which is near the Theodore Industrial Canal.
Nichols said, "My son's last day at work the last time they'd seen him was the 14th of August. He left there and left two checks he hadn't picked up."
In the meantime, Nichols said he's been handing out flyers and recalling fond memories.
He said he'd go fishing in the mornings with his son and his grandsons would go with them if they were out of school.
When asked what that was like, Nichols said, "You had to know that little one (Joshua). He'd tear up a handful."
And Nichols said if his son is listening, he would want to know "that the youngins are okay. That's what we're worried about."
Mobile Police said Michael Nichols was last seen driving a gold 1995 Mercury Villager with Alabama tag O5180AY.
If you have any information on where he and his sons might be, call police.

My heart goes out to all family.  I am a mother of two boys and I would go out of mind.  My prayers are with the sister and mother and all family.  I pray that they are found safe and sound, all turns out well for all parties, especially for the father and boys.  It is so hard watching the news and hearing these these stories, makes me wonder what is in store for all of us next. This is happening far too much and our children are usually in the middle of whatever situation.

The father says the last he was seen by co-workers was on Friday, Aug. 14th.  Has anyone else come forth that saw him and the kids after that date?

The weather that weekend looks like it was pretty good with increasing clouds, but good visibility.  Monday the 17th heavy rain moved into the picture and visibility dropped severely that afternoon.

His father mentioned seeing him along Dog River and that he worked near the Theodore Industrial Canal.  What other waterways would he normally pass during his routine travels?  Also, where did the kids stay while he was at work?

The family has no idea.  He has not talked of leaving, no arguments over custody and there are no records of them being enrolled in school anywhere in Alabama.  And I think maybe they are watching for that in other states, but I am not positive about that.  His job had no idea he would not be back, and he has paychecks that he never picked up.  He is very close to his mom, and its odd for him to not contact her.  Really scary situation for Ryan and Joshua’s mom and Michaels mom.  I am a mom (& the boys aunt) and I could not imagine what they are going through.  Everyone is praying for them!

What does the family think is going on?  Did he ever talk about going to any particular place?  Would he keep the kids out of school?  Was there any recent arguments about custody?

The word is getting out. I am one of Michael’s cousins who lives in Maine. We are hoping and praying for the safe return of Michael, Ryan, and Joshua.

The family has been added to the prayer chain at our church and I have as many of my friends I can reach to pray as well.

Charity, I’m a mom, too, and I cannot even begin to imagine how you feel. Please give Miss Stephanie a hug for me and let her know Miss Christine is thinking of her.

The Maine Nichols Family is sending all of you our love and prayers.

I wish the police department Godspeed in finding Michael, Ryan, and Joshua.

We are all praying for their safe return.  The Mom should have been able to speak on the news also.  Just because the dad has custody does not mean that she is not equally a parent.  When they return, someone needs to inform the father of that.  Stephanie chose to stay with her mom (thank goodness) and that tells you that she is very involved in their lives. And Dont worry, everyones praying for them and they will all return safely. The Police department did take a while to make a move, they move when they get ready to.

The reason that it took so long for the MPD to get involed was they figured that he was not wanting to be found.  I am the children’s mother.  I personally have flyers, his parents as well and they are being put out.  Michael ONLY has primary custody not sole custody.  Daphne 76 to answer your question, they do have their clothing.  They lived with me for almost 2 years prior to this.  In August their dad came and said that he was getting a house and he was giving the oldest two children the decision to where they want to live.  Ryan decided to move with his dad with Joshua and I stil have their sister with me, which she decided to stay with me.  I pray every night that someone will call and let us know that they are ok.  Thank you for all of the prayers and concerns.  I hope they are found soon.  If Ryan and Joshua happen to read this I want both of you to know that I love you very much and miss you and so does your sister.

Please pray for these kids and their father and the families.  These 2 boys also have a sister (as Michael has a daughter) who is very much needing these prayers as well..  You can only imagine what she is going through.  Our babies are missing.  It is always disturbing and sad when any child is missing, but when it is your own family…
Laura- Ryan,Joshua AND Stephanie’s Aunt

For what ever reason,a month is a bit long to wait before reporting someone missing or to consider starting a missing persons investigation if the family members have requested it.At this time it doesn’t look good for the welfare of these three, but here’s hoping they are alive and well.

Since Michael is 33 years old and has legal custody, an Amber alert could not be sounded.  This is not the fault of the Police department, it is the law.  Please don’t beat on the Police, they are doing all that can be done at this time.

All we can do is keep our eyes open and pray they will be found.
