MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama cities and counties are getting
enough federal stimulus money to hire 114 police officers.
Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder
announced the law enforcement grants for all 50 states Tuesday. The
grants will employ more than 1,000 officers nationwide for three
years.
Huntsville is getting $2.6 million to employ 15 officers. Mobile
is receiving nearly $2.5 million for 20 officers. Tuscaloosa is
getting more than $2 million for a dozen officers.
Three cities were awarded grants for five officers. Decatur and
Bessemer are receiving more than $700,000 each and Florence is
getting about $622,000.
The other Alabama grants were for less than five officers each.

They also stated that 7,000 cities applied, but the Justice Department decided the funding should go to those with a budget shortfall or high crime rate.  So since the Mayor states that crime is down in Mobile it must be the budget shortfall being the reason Mobile is receiving the money.  What are they going to do in the 4 year when this money is gone?  They won’t be able to afford them and let some good officers go.

I hope that the law enforcement agencies get every cent of this money, because they need it. However, if there is a way to do it, I have a feeling that the city of Mobile’s city leaders and mayor will find a way to keep a good portion of it. There should be a way to make sure that the money goes where it is intended to go and does not get parcelled out to people that have no right to it. JMO

Mobile police are only interested in tickets/checkpoints. If you call them, don’t expect them to arrive when the criminal is still on the scene. Criminals have a huge head start with MPD, and they know it.

i agree with surf.  they don’t do anything now.  it seems to be a laughing stock in more places everyday.

If these new officers catch these criminals where will they put them.  The prisons are full now.  They will need millions more to build prisons to house them or maybe they can send them to the white house to have a beer with obama.

2.5 MILL for 20 officers? that sure seems like ALOT of money. I thought the city only paid them like 18 grand to start. no matter though….the city will not force the new officers to do their job correctly, just like the ones we have now don’t do their jobs. Mobile’s Finest!!!..Hey I see where the city pd made HEADLINE NEWS all over the nation, bout the retarded man getting tazed. Its ok to drive 60 down cottage hill, university, etc etc, but don’t stay in the bathroom too long!!!

So for about $10 million Alabama will get some new cops for 3 years. 114 people will get temp jobs.  That’s money well spent on a loan from the Chinese!  Way to go Obama!

You have a job for 3 years then what?

man, beer sales are going to rocket!  The new cure all.  Maybe the price of beer will go down and the economy will go up.  At least we will all be so drunk we won’t give a d*%n.

and our comments got kicked out?  Hey, what about freedom of speech, it was all in fun.

Are these Mobile officers?  Sorry, you have my couriosity up.
