Changes could be on the way for Mobile County High School students.
School leaders unveiled a new rezoning plan during a public hearing at Vigor High School tonight.
Superintendent Dr. Roy Nichols says right now it is just a proposal.

He hopes to rezone high schools including Blount, B.C. Rain, Murphy, Leflore, Vigor, Williamson and Davidson.
Several of the schools are either over populated or do not have enough students.
Nichols says by decreasing the population it could also cut down on school violence.
"It will save us transportation money,it will make it easier to staff the schools and also to maintain order and discipline in schools. If they're too large it gets very difficult to manage,"Said Nichols.

Superintendent Nichols plans to present the proposal to the board in the coming months. If approved the changes would not go into effect until Fall of 2010.

CHIP? You coulda fooled me. When my son went to school here, they couldn’t seem to enter an apartment number on the mail. I never got a SINGLE piece of mail from the school district.

If the teachers at Blunt say it’s not safe for them, what make it safe for the kids?

One of the ladies that works at our office used a P.O.Box and had all her bills sent to the P.O.Box. So when the school asked for three forms with the address and the same zipcode. The school allowed the children to attend. I guess it just depends on who can get away with what. She lived in Saraland and her kids attended MGM.

You can’t register your child with a PO BOX number. When you walk in to register, the school personnel pulls out a map and argues about where exactly you live. There are several high schools I would have gladly rented across town to keep my child out of attending.

You are right, and then they are counted as part of the “homeless” population,if they are “living” with family.

I totally agreed with you chip68. I known several people that have done this.

Rezoning is not going to help the situation. People use relatives and friends addresses, set up P.O. Boxes at the post office etc., just to get their children in the school of their choice. Ever time a new school is built to help with over crowding, the new school becomes over crowded and the older schools have less and less students. If the school board is going to waste their time and hours to rezone then they need to follow the policies set and monitor more closely who belongs in what zone.
