The Mobile County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Jerome Howard was shot in the head while serving a warrant on a mentally impaired man.

Carl Williams' family had filed a petition because they want him to be undergo a mental evaluation. A probable cause hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to order that evaluation was scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

Shortly after 7:00 a.m., Howard went looking for Williams who lives in the woods behind a home on Joe Carl Drive South in Theodore. The family says Williams has multiple weapons.

Howard had just pulled into the driveway of the home when a bullet came through the door of his patrol car. It went through his hat. Bullet fragments got lodged in the top of his head.

Howard drove himself to safe location and called for help. He was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Williams has been taken into custody but has not been charged with the shooting.

Deputies are currently scouring the woods looking for weapons.

I hope they find the stash of guns! Thank GOD the deputy survived!

Yeah if someone is that mentally ill than they do not need to left unattended in the woods with a stash of weapons, another innocent person almost was killed, again.  This man’s family knew what he was capable of and knew he had weapons. That would have been nice to know before the deputy just drove out there. This family should not have left him out there alone with all those weapons. He could have went nuts, and went on a shooting rampage killing numerous of innocent people.

Thank God the deputy was not killed.  What in the devil are these people thinking, letting a nutcase with firearms live in the woods!!! Duh.

“Mentally ill” or not, he needs to be charged. Quit making excuses for criminals-their age, their mental status, etc. I am so very glad the deputy is OK.

I agree Bamabob…and no one else but you and I seem to realize this…is it odd that everyone else sort of “missed” the fact that a mentally ill man was living in the woods with a stash of weapons behind a residence?

“Sorry Mrs. Smith, that Carl shot you in the leg while you were mowing the grass”...“don’t pay him any attention, that silly Carl just loves living in the woods and shooting at people with his guns”...“shucks, I bet he ain’t bathed in weeks”...“say, you think you could round him up and warsh him off with that there garden hose?”

You might have a problem, if a relative is living in the woods behind your house with a stash of weapons.

I am glad that the deputy is ok. However, I do agree that there should have been some kind of back up there especially since the family was aware of the dangerous situation.

The situation could have been prevented if the family had fore warned the Sherrif’s department about the situation. I am thankful that his injuries were not life threatening but he shoukd have had back up.

If the family were able to get their mentally ill relative into evaluation, how long could he be held for treatment?

This deputy is lucky to be alive. I guess it wasn’t his time to leave this world.  You never know from day to day what you will face or who you will face and draw your last breath.
