JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A new report says Mississippi again is
America's fattest state, and adult obesity rates across the nation
are on a steady climb.
Nationally, adult obesity rates rose in 37 states in the past
year. That's according to the report released Tuesday by Trust for
America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The report
said no state saw a decrease.
The report said Mississippi's adult obesity rate is 31.7 percent
- the highest in the nation. It was followed by West Virginia with
30.6 percent; Alabama with 30.1 percent; Louisiana with 29.5
percent and South Carolina with 29.2 percent.
Pete Smith, spokesman for Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, said
the state has taken steps to encourage residents to live a
healthier lifestyle.

Swetnsour:  You need to contact Haley Barbour’s office and tell him you are going to be his new state publicists!!!! Way to stand up for MS.

southfan1981:  For one I do not allow my child to participate in the school lunch program because he is not in the public school system.  I monitor closely what he eats, without being obsessive about it.  I tell him the difference between good food and bad foods but I allow him to have a coke or a candy bar if he wants one.  The funny thing of it is, since I do not eat candy and VERY SELDOMLY drink a soft drink, my son doesn’t eat these things either.  Since my surgery he (7 years old) can out eat me and believe it or not having seen me be overweight and unable to play football, baseball, etc with him before but able to do all that and more with him now, he is his own best advocate for healthy eating.  I know all to well we are what we eat, however, I also know that it is not only what you eat that makes you obese, there are many factors.

Well todays Mississippians were just born late.  Back in the way back day they photographed women that were overweight because it meant they were prosperous and not underfed.  There are more songs and more singers and more prosperous people that came from Mississippi.  The people in Mississippi are real country folks and know how to open a door for a lady and just be themselves now,  you can’t touch that.  My Great Grand Father created Mayflower Van Lines, he is from Yazoo MS.  Faith Hill is from Mississippi. Kid Rock my Rock Idol visited MS and then one of his newest songs is Mississippi.  Northrup Grumman would not be in MS and prosper if MS wasn’t all that.  Don’t be a hater.

That guy aint fat…hes just got on tight jeans…Kentucky Fried Chicken is the culprit I say….Its a national conspiracy to keep us “po southerners” out of shape and for us to die off quicker…..........................

MUST… Politically incorrect?  HUH! I do believe you hit the nail right on the head. Corporations. Who gets rich as we get ill from malnutrition and wasted from under tested medications? I laughed when i was in the hospital after giving birth to my son and was handed breastfeeding literature that was written by Nestlees. I had a nurse come in to lecture me about how to nurse. She used information she got from the same formula companies. What is next, McDonalds telling us how to eat healthy with their dunkers and ketchup as a vegetable? I think we are lazy. We use TV as a babysitter and allow our children to be exposed to SALES PITCHES for hours on end. Then we buy them the crap they are told is necessary to be a happy meal kid. If we do not see a connection between hyperactivity and kids being entertained by something other than their minds, we do not deserve to be parents.

My politically incorrect response is because how many drug manufacturers have a hand in the making of our baby formulas and numerous other foods and drinks.  They feed our children these stimulant foods and drinks and then our children cannot sit still in school and the teachers say they are ADHD and that they must be tested and put on medicine.  Doctors widely prescribe ADHD’s meds to children as young as 5 years of age and to keep the harmony and hope that it helps our children we pay outrageous prices for the meds.  I am not saying that all ADHD cases are directly related to their diets but if you look at the research over the past 15 years the number of cases of ADHD has skyrocketed which coencideds with the changes in our dietary habits.  So why do we put high fructose corn syrup in baby formula????  So that the revolving door of revenue can continue for big drug companies in the name of research and IT IS LEGAL IN OUR COUNTRY.

Mustyouknow, have you ever checked out the ingredients in a can of baby formula? We have set up our kids for diabetes and a craving for sugar. Years ago, there was a study where they were trying to get rats to drink alcohol. They had to first train their palate with sugar water in order to get the rats to have a taste for alcohol. What are we doing to our kids? Fruit roll ups, juicey juice, tators, corn everything…  just why are we training our kids to crave the sugars of carbs and disdain the fiber of vegetables and whole fruits?

And to think the PEOPLE OF MISSISSIPPI took it as an honor when Oprah came to Meridian and declared Mississippi as the fatest state.  People stood in line for hours in hopes of meeting her and her personal trainer.  For one I was embarassed by the attention and the fact that once again something so negative was being promoted nationally about Mississippi.  Let’s see how much attention is given as a follow up on this with Oprah, so far I haven’t heard of anything. Finally, as far as the steps that have been taken to encourage residents to live a healthier lifestyle the only thing that I can really say that has been done is the “Let’s Go Walking Mississippi” campaign.  We still serve high fructose corn syrup products in our schools, use simple startches in our meal programs in our schools, etc…
