Sam Jones will be the only name on the August ballot in the Mobile mayor's race. Tuesday was the last day to qualify and by 5 pm, the incumbent was the sole runner for the seat.

There was talk that Mobile County Commissioner Steve Nodine might run against him. He threw in the towel but not before lashing out at the current administration. Nodine believes that the city "over cooked" the statistics released on Monday showing that crime is down. 'They played political football yesterday with throwing statistics up there when the people of this community realize how bad violent crime has become and we want to do something about it."

Mayor Jones wouldn't comment on Nodine's accusation. "We look forward to working with Mr. Nodine. We worked with him for many years. I served with him and don't have any issues with Mr. Nodine, be happy to work with him.'

Nodine made the announcement that he wasn't running on the Uncle Henry radio show. If you would like to read his statement, click here.

Semmes needs to get on the stick and finish the process that is required and become a city within the next few weeks or months.  Otherwise, that greedy mayor will be trying to find ways to make that part of the county part of Mobile.

As for the City expansion, it will be interesting to see how they draw the proposed areas to make sure they get the votes to pass annexation. Probably wherever there is a Wal-Mart outside the City, there will be a proposed annexation.  Has a park ever been built in Mobile Terrace as promised?  How are the streets, crime and lights in there now? They put in big entrance markers to Hillsdale, what about Mobile Terrace?  Have they started to pick up trash in Theodore?  Has crime decreased in Theodore since it has become part of the City?  Just a few questions of the questions that come to mind.

Everybody needs to oppose every single annexation attempt by the city of Mobile.  As we have witnessed firsthand, all the city wants is your money.  All you get in return is a lot of rules and regulations and of course much much higher taxes.  Better police protection? NO! Free garbage collection? Maybe for a little while and then you will be charged a fee. Street lights? Maybe, if the city makes enough tax money off of you. Higher taxes? Definitely, property taxes, city taxes, car tags, and sales taxes will go up drastically.  Will you be able to target shoot or do fireworks any longer? NO! The city has laws that will get you arrested if you do these things. Don’t believe a word the politicians tell you. They will promise anything to get you to vote yes for this. JMHO

he was probably threatened…..also mobile has been cooking up crime stats and hiding the real numbers for years- this I know first hand as a retired officer.  It is not safe anywhere in Mobile and will get worse with the current and now future administration.

Get ready for annexations - I wonder if working with Mr. Nodine will include letting him and other members of the County Commission know in advance what areas of the county he wants to take into the City.  According to one news story, one of his first ways to improve the city is expansion.  Why not improve what the city already has.  Crime was then mentioned second - on Monday crime seemed to be the first priority.
