MOBILE, Alabama - Matt Walker was expected at Government Plaza on Monday for a preliminary hearing but didn't show up. His lawyer, Buzz Jordan, says he's in a California rehab. Jordan confirms that his client is in a recovery center but won't tell us why.
The prosecutor in the case says this is the first he's heard of Walker being out-of-state. Even Judge Michael McMaken was surprised to hear the news. "I have yet to see Matt Walker in court on this case. I have every right to see him."
The hearing was waived and Walker's case is now headed to the grand jury.
Walker is accused of receiving upwards of a million dollars in stolen antiques from a handful of high dollar burglaries in the past two years. He's charged with four counts of receiving stolen property.
Walker is a well-known casino developer and entrepreneur. To make sure he doesn't skip the country, Walker's passport was turned in.
Walker is expected to get out of rehab and come back to Mobile next week. His lawyer says he has no doubt that Walker will be indicted.
