A liquified natural gas terminal could be built 63 miles from Alabama's coast if a proposal has its way. And that decision could be made in the next few weeks.
TORP Technology is the company behind the proposal to build a terminal that uses an "open loop system"--a process that involves using sea water.
While the company says the system is environmentally safe and would minimize the impact to marine life, some environmental groups, are opposing the terminal. David Underhill with the Mobile Bay Sierra Club believes the company isn't concerned with conservation.
"There are closed loop alternatives that heat the super cool liquified natural gas back up to a gaseous state without using the warmth of the water to do it and they don't kill anything,"Said Underhill.
Alabama Governor Bob Riley has until October 10th to make a decision on the LNG terminal. If you'd like to learn more about the proposal or voice your opinion, the U.S. Coast Guard is encouraging you to attend a public meeting this Tuesday at the Mobile Convention Center. The hearing begins at 5 pm.

I say build a string of them 63 miles from the coast of Alabama using the open loop system ! I think the cooler temps in the water around them would help to bring the catagories down on storms headed in this direction.
