Governor Bob Riley has signed into law a bill that would offer financial incentives for film and TV makers. The bill provides breaks on sales income and lodging taxes for companies that spend a half million dollars (or more) on production in Alabama. The law would also gives tax relief for soundtrack production
Filmmakers would get rebates equal to 35% of the payroll for using state workers and 25 % for production costs. The Legislature put a limit of $5 million in rebates available during the current year, with the cap growing to $7.5 million in 2010 and $10 million in years beyond.
Riley hopes future movies like Forrest Gump and Sweet Home Alabama are shot here instead of Georgia or the Carolinas.
