MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - The director of the state docks says layoffs
are likely as the Alabama State Port Authority deals with a $10
million net loss that could get larger before the fiscal year ends.
Jimmy Lyons said in an e-mail to employees this week that the
economic situation globally is terrible, and has hit the docks
harder than expected.
Lyons said the Port Authority cut the work week from 40 hours to
32 hours for 350 employees in April and is now considering several
other options, including layoffs.
Lyons said coal shipments, which account for about half of the
docks business, plummeted quickly and unexpectedly, contributing to
the loss.

Minimum wage goes up to $7.25 tomorrow…Go get a job in the icy air conditioning of a McDonalds or Wal-Mart!!

I feel for anyone losing their job today.  I had to leave Mobile and Alabama to find work. I feel very fortunate to find work in todays economy.  I think it’s likely to get a lot worse with the war on business owners that is taking place currently.  To the people with jobs, hang on to what you’ve got and save up.

There are alot of Companys out there just like this one. The people who do the work are the ones getting laid off not the ones in the offices or Supers just walking around!!!!!

The director could save Thousands by laying off just half of the Bosses.  But you watch when the layoffs are annouced it will be only hourly employees and none of the Bosses that get laid off and they are the ones making the largest salaries.  Times are hard on everyone-but the docks is not known for very good managment which makes you wonder if the layoffs are caused by the economy or bad managment.  Example a trip to Paris for an air show for 9 days at the docks expense-and this had what to do with State Docks business?
