MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House has voted to give
teenagers a good reason to behave in school - if they don't, they
will have to wait before they can drive.
The House voted 96-0 for a bill by Rep. Mike Curtis that sets up
a point system for teenagers 13-years-old and older. The teenagers
accumulate points if they are disciplined in school. The points
range from one point for in-school suspension up to 40 points if a
student is expelled from school.
Curtis said the points would be added up and a student would
have to wait one week for every point accumulated when he or she
became old enough for a learner's permit or driver's license.
Curtis is a Democrat from Florence.
The bill now goes to the Senate for debate.

Wait4Me, I agree with you 100%.  Driving is a privilege, not a right.  I believe that ANYONE showing that they are not responsible enough to behave in school/society should not be allowed to have a license.

Ok, I know several teachers and they ALL agree that this would help them out, why you ask? Because PARENTS will not discipline their little darlings and heaven forbid the school try to take some action against bad behavior.  Parents come to the schools everyday and berate the faculty because they feel as though little Johnny was treated unfairly or suspended for a little fight or was not given a dessert after lunch.  Give me a break, if I were suspended my mom would ask 2 questions, first did you do it? And second Why? Then the butt whooping would commence. After that I would have to go to school and apologize to the teachers and staff that were affected by my lapse in judgment. I went to a local H.S. football game last year and three students were sting in front of us and some other elderly adults just a cussing and standing up and yelling.  One of the older ladies asked them to sit and they cussed her and told her to move.  Now a teacher heard this and reported it to the school administrator, he suspended the main offender for 2 days (because paddling is out in school, but apparently allowed in the courthouse) The kids father came in to the office and was very belligerent with ALL of the staff and threatened to sue the school and county because little Johnny was being treated unfairly.  Now Jatlyons, I do think this would help and I am sorry you lost respect for me for having an OPINION.

i just lost all respect for wait4me

I am no longer in school but if i was i would say no way in heck is communist that i have no vote or choice for going to come up with some biased bill when he has knowledge of the situation. Do you think school officials are going to think twice of the unjust ramifications. All individuals under 19 need to come up with their own governing body so that they will stop being dumped on by senile old people. Even people unjustly denied a license 4 dropping out are given one for certain uses. If their is nothing written in for this i would get in trouble on purpose and make the state financially liable for my inability to work. Kids if there ever was a time to take up arms to take care of a bully by all means. Not to condone certain past acts and i guess you can’t even condone defending yourself. Senate must afford personal drivers 4 their non-working kids.

message shortened from obscene 1st one sorry 4 anything mistyped

I agree the drunk driver’s, drug users and taffic violators need to have their license taken, some of them probably need to be in jail.  One or two weeks will not hurt a kid, in fact there was discussion somewhere at some time (I don’t remember where I heard it)about raising the age for a driver’s license.
Sometimes it takes something that will wake up the parent to get their attention.  Hopefully this would help prevent some major problems down the road.

Choices,,, walk away or fight and get into trouble, right?  I know sometimes you just can’t walk away, so you take the consequences of staying to fight, right?  The purpose of this law is to 1. keep kids in school. 2. Maintain an orderly classroom environment for the rest of the class and teachers. If the parents would have done their jobs the kids wouldn’t get into trouble.  Its not like they are making the kids wait until they are 18 or 21, they have to wait 1 yes 1 week for every point, how many points do you think a kid will get before he/she says “ wow I better straighten up”

Waitforme excuse me ????? your #3 makes no sense. Kids are bullied every single day, they don’t put themselves in that position they are the victims, I know very well that having to fight back is the only way to protect themselves.

3.The kids that get into fights, even to protect themselves, put them selves in that position, if they had not done something to the other person they would not need to protect themselves

I know of someone that has a DUI and two possesion of marijuana concictions and still has his liscense, it was never even suspended.  Why should he be allowed to drive but not the child that got in a little trouble at school must wait?

I would rather see liscenses taken away from individuals that are a hazard on the road, i.e. multiple moving violations, DUIs, and the elderly instead of teens that have no driving history.  Find another way to punish for bad behaviour in school.  Take liscenses away from people that create harm to others while driving.  If removing the right to drive is going to be used for punishment for bad behaviour then take it away from the sex offenders, drug dealers, and prostitutes not the kid who got in trouble at school when they were 13.

Cameo,
This policy is just what the schools and the parents need.
1.Most parents never punish their kids, “my little Johnny would never do that”
2.The schools are not allowed to punish the kids these days, they will get sued or threats to be sued if the teachers are “to hard on little Susie”
3.The kids that get into fights, even to protect themselves, put them selves in that position, if they had not done something to the other person they would not need to protect themselves.
4.If the number of illegal drivers goes up, please see number 1.
If the kid gets suspended or expelled they will get points against them, the parents and the kids have the choice of corporal punishment, i.e. spanking, but you know most parents won’t let their little darling’s get punished, please see #1 again.

So let me understand. Now the government is going to punish our children, besides the schools punishing them and their parents punishing them, making them wait until they are 18, or 19 or 20 to get a drivers license. Which in turn makes several things happen.
1.) The parents or older siblings will have to drive this punished person to work, or to look for jobs. Which means taking time off of work to do this.
2.) The number of illegal drivers will go up, and if they have an accident, they will be uninsured and therefore the people that are in the accident won’t have any coverage.
I can go on and on about how bad of an idea this is.
Because schools have a zero tolerance level for fighting and all parties in a fight are expelled or suspended from school, even a child defending him/herself will be suspended and therefore be prevented from getting a license. This is a bad policy all the way around.
