MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House has passed a bill that
would prevent convicted sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a college or university.
The bill by Rep. Jamie Ison of Mobile would also prevent
convicted sex offenders from loitering within 500 yards of a
college or university.
The bill passed the House Tuesday on a 97-0 vote.
Existing law prohibits convicted sex offenders from living
within 2,000 feet of high schools or elementary schools. Ison's
bill expands the current law to include colleges and universities.
The bill would not prohibit convicted sex offenders from
attending a college or university, but they would not be able to
live on campus.

Not on campus. But they can live right next door in the cheap apartments with all the other students that dont live on campus.  Yes this a stupid bill.

What sense does that make?? They can be IN your classes, walking to and from your classes, eating in the cafeteria with you…but they can’t live nearby??? Is the House just STUPID?

KxVicious,

Look at the last line

“The bill would not prohibit convicted sex offenders from attending a college or university, but they would not be able to live on campus.”

What? So now if you’re a sex offender, you can’t go to COLLEGE?

We’re talking not just VIOLENT sex offenders, but the ones like when a 16 year old has sex with a 15 year old, statutory cases? That 16 year old can’t go to COLLEGE because his girlfriend wasn’t 16 yet?

That’s just…much.

Yes, namely the parents!I figured you would miss my point. Which is, The parents should be more proactive in their childrens safety rather than getting drunk and putting the burden on the police. Is the city supposed to provide babysitters while the parents party?

I am referring to the laws that keep sex offenders away from the children.  It is impossible for the parents to know who is a convicted sex offender and who is not. By the way, I no longer have young children around. In addition, I have seen many children running wild during the parades without any adult supervising them, and this is dangerous. Somebody should be looking out for their safety.

Alabama (paranoid) Patriot, Unlike schools, no one is required to take their children to the drunken events in downtown mobile. Why are you expecting some agency to protect your children? Are you incapable? Do you allow your children to go to these events without your supervision? What kind of parent would dream of such?

What about any events in downtown Mobile that have children around?  Are the police and DHR on the alert for them?

I don’t get it. The bill is expanded from high schools and elementary schools to include colleges and universities. What about day cares?
