DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge has ordered the arrest of
an Alabama sheriff who was held in contempt of court for failing to
adequately feed jail inmates while profiting from the skimpy meals.
U.S. District Judge U.W. Clemon ordered marshals to take Morgan
County Sheriff Greg Bartlett into custody at the end of a hearing
Wednesday in Decatur.
The sheriff had testified that he legally pocketed about
$212,000 over three years with surplus meal money but denied that
inmates were improperly fed. Alabama's unusual practice of letting
sheriffs profit from feeding inmates dates back to the Depression.
Clemon, however, said the sheriff would be held until he comes
up with a plan to provide the 300 jail inmates with nutrionally
adequate meals, as required by an earlier court order.

we did the same thing here, allowed jack tillman who was a crooked as he looked to escape without prosecution of the same crime. if you are only spending 70 cents a day then fine, return the money to the general fund. dont pocket it. all the yeatrs jack was sherrif and thats what you remember about him when you see him is he’s the one who stole the money, or another one who stole the money. lock THEM up, including jack.

Hmmmm…... we may have located those missing horses.

Is Tillman now giving lessons on how to get rich from food funds?

I agree. Someone needs to investigate and get to the bottom of this.

I think the Decatur Department needs to be investigated, and then completely overhauled.  You have the sheriff who is pocketing 212k, and a Sergeant stealing 70k in drug money.  I bet the whole department is crooked.  Time for an investigation people!  Don’t just let the sheriff figure out a new meal plan for the inmates.  Get real.  This is a total slap on the wrist.
