A strange new twist in the three year long battle over the Mobile County Commission District 1 seat.

Juan Chastang announced Thursday that he is resigning from the seat effective tomorrow.

“I thank Governor Riley for the appointment to the Commission and for the opportunity to have served the citizens of Mobile County,” Chastang said. “It has been a pleasure to know and work for the residents of this community.”

Chastang was initially appointed by Governor Bob Riley in 2005 to fill the seat vacated by Sam Jones when he became mayor.

A judicial panel removed Chastang in April 2007 saying Governor Riley overstepped his authority. Chastang was then defeated in a special election that October by Merceria Ludgood.

In May, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Riley did not need federal approval to appoint Chastang to the County Commission.

Last month, County Commissioners Steve Nodine and Mike Dean asked Attorney General Troy King to weigh in on the issue. King said the county should stop paying Ludgood.

Ludgood stepped down August 26. Chastang returned to the seat three days later vowing to seek back pay.

Ludgood is running unopposed for the District 1 seat in the November election.

You bet I could use it,that $79,000 or at least about $39,000 of it for personal use and the other $40,000 and the $300,000 would go a long way on some much needed help in the county. Imagine, they all get that much ! It seems there should only be need of a pittance pay for commissioners or the mayor. What ever happened to “ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTY CAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR YOUR COUNTY”. As Senator McCain said, some of his appointees he would ask to serve for $1 a year. Now that’s getting up there where a lot of politicians are over paid at a $1 a year. grin

Maybe the money that was spent on the lawsuit should come from the democrats who brought the suit challenging Chastang’s appt - there would be no settlement issue if they had not brought the suit which ultimately showed that Gov Riley was correct in appointing him.  Carl could put that money to good use when he becomes Commissioner for District One!!!
As for the settlement, I understood from another story on wkrg.com, that the salary is $79K per year and that Chastang got back pay for the time out of office (more than year) and $5k for 23 days when brought back on.

Claycitymadness, this is probably too late to give you any info now. I’ve been gone again to the funeral home to see another person off that I knew. Seems I know more people in the grave yard now than those walking around. My black suit doesn’t even hang long enough to get the wrinkles out now,and gota go to another one tomorrow, Mercy. No 45 doesn’t run through Saraland, 43 does. If you haven’t left yet allow your self at least three hours. I thought they had come up with a better way than those ear tubes but it’s been a while. I think the article was published in JAMA. If your going up 45 be careful because it did have a bad rep for wrecks especially with those over loaded logging trucks.

hey carl i have to go up 45 to meridian later today or in the morning, any idea how the road is or how long it takes to get there? does it go through saraland? wondering how much time i need to give. gotta be at the hospital at 0630 to do the saturday morning tubes in the kids ears thing.

but he is wearing a nice suit, well at least the jacket i cant see the trousers

Willy Bean could do a better job then any politition.

No offense, Carl, but you are too honest for politics!  (hahaha)

You have my vote

VOTE FOR ME for district one commissioner. Vote for CARL and I promise to give you more than 3 weeks of work for $90,000 and to give $40,000 back to needy causes, such as fighting crime and unwanted annexations. I ought to be a shoo in uh ?

$90,000.00 paycheck for 3 weeks? What the he77 is going on in the County? Juan you are nothing more than a thief in my books, you said you were ENTITLED to the packpay when you first came back to the council, well how about paying the taxpayers back for all the money and time spend on the lawsuits, and fees the taxpayer paid to get you your job back, just so you could get a large check and quit. You have no morals Juan.
