MOBILE, Alabama - Unemployment numbers released today show the rate in Alabama at a 25 year high.According to official numbers from the state, the jobless rate is now 10.9%. That number is up slightly from 10.7 % last month.
The hardest hit Alabama county continues to be Wilcox where 1-in-4 are out of work. Monroe and Conecuh Counties aren't too far behind. Both counties have unemployment figures over 20%.
In Mobile County, more than 20,000 thousand people are jobless and that's why the local employment agency is buzzing with activity.
At Alabama's Career Center System on Springhill Plaza Court, people are taking advantage of the services. You can use computers to look for jobs online, get help with your resume and apply for unemployment benefits.
47-year old Ramona Heyman lost her job at a casino in May. She had to move back in with her parents but doesn't give up hope that she will find work. "There are times that I have wanted to give up but I look at my children and grandchildren and that keeps me going."
Jobs in banking and manufacturing suffered the biggest losses this month. Positions in government, health, education and transportation saw the most growth.
