ALAMEDA, California - Coach Tom Cable says JaMarcus Russell understands why he was benched in the first half of the Oakland Raiders' latest blowout loss.

Cable pulled Russell on Sunday after the quarterback turned over
the ball three times against the New York Jets, saying Russell was
"out of sorts." Russell said after the 38-0 loss that he didn't
feel that was the case and that he had made no bad decisions or
reads before being replaced by Bruce Gradkowski.

Cable said he met with Russell on Monday and that he believes
Russell understands what he did wrong in the game. The former No. 1
overall pick has had 13 giveaways already this season but will
start again Sunday against San Diego.
