MOBILE, Alabama - Its fair time in Mobile once again. The Greater Gulf State Fair opened Friday afternoon.
Despite a slow economy and talk of swine flu, people put aside their concerns to have fun.
When asked what was new this year, Fair President Bill Wenzel said, "We've got an awesome science exhibit inside the building. It's a hands-on experience for the kids, especially. We have a BMX Bike show this year."
People have different reasons for going to the fair.
Javay Jones said, "We brought the kids here to have a good time."
When asked her favorite part of the fair, Wanda King said, "Keeping them (the kids) busy."
When asked about her favorite food, Claire Collins of Mobile said, "I like the funnel cakes."
"I like to go to the slide," said Reagan Warner.
Jessica Lewis of Mobile said, "The megadrop is really fun. Its like a square, and you go up really high, then you drop."
Fair officials say they also put plenty of hand sanitizing stations around the fair site.
They come in especially handy at the petting zoo.
Wenzel said, "We have plenty of hand washing stations. We have those located all around any of the animals, just to encourage that."
The fair runs through Sunday, November 1.
