BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A judge in Birmingham has scheduled a
hearing for early next year to consider claims by Alabama death row
inmate Tommy Arthur that he is innocent in a 1982 murder case from
Colbert County.
Circuit Judge Teresa Pulliam has scheduled a hearing for Arthur
for Feb. 17. He has already escaped three separate execution dates,
most recently in July.
Arthur's lawyer says a confession by another inmate proves
Arthur wasn't to blame for the murder of Muscle Shoals businessman
Troy Wicker. The defense also contends DNA evidence will prove his
innocence.
The state argues that Arthur is guilty and should be put to
death.

If there were a way we could shoot these murderers to the moon and they had to work their butts off every day to eat and keep alive,I would be for it instead of death but as I said earlier at this time there is no such place. I don’t have the need to kill either but I have a strong need for justice and the need for family and friends to be safe as they go about their daily lives and never thinking about harming anyone or anything.I guess we will have to agree to disagree and you are entitled to your opinions, and my opinion that sometimes you have no other choice but to put to death these animals that look like humans will remain with me until there is something better and safer for the public. If everyone who is against the death penalty would step up and pledge a good bit of money each week for a super secure place to hold these murderers to relieve the other tax payers of the load then that might be a first step to back up their belief of no death penalty.

We are all human. We have all had experiences that have built our ideals and supported our beliefs. When we are presented with something highly different, we suffer from congnitive dissonance. It is too uncomfortable to live in that state long and we either choose to ignore conflicting messages or we change our thinking. It’s a choice. I’ve worked in Law Enforcement and public administration with criminals. I’ve worked in child protection with perpetrators. I’ve worked in hospital settings with the victims of abusers. I’ve suffered from evil abuse. I have looked into the eyes of a soul murderer and had the cold chill run down my back. Of course, I know they need to be separated from the rest of our kind, law abiding citizens. Also, I know they are walking around with us, doing harm, causing rife and creating pain. I don’t have the need to kill. I won’t make the ultimate judgement. That is how I decided to settle that cognitive dissonance.

Southfan1981 I think you’ve hit the point I was trying to make on the difference of mine and yours interpretation of the bible regarding killing.Your interpretation is just as correct as mine because that is what we believe, and contrary to what Getreal says,What we believe is important, that is what we base all our decisions on right or wrong.Killing is never right but we have no other options in most of these cases because if they get out they will kill again knowing they probably will get the chance again if they’re patient. If you have a mad dog roaming the neighborhood biting who ever it can, kids or who ever you put him down for the safety and well being of the community and the same for these cold blooded killers.I have never seen proof of a innocent person being put to death but there probably has been but I’m willing to bet the process we use has been 99% right and there is no such thing as perfect in this world. As for the death penalty being a deterrent—-

the last documentary I saw on one of those satellite channels by a researcher said from all the researches he had found suggested that the death penalty was effective by a two to one margin on all the researches to help deter murders. We all have our opinions and mine is we don’t need to be coddling cold blooded killers. Some killers deserve mercy and others need to be put down just as a rabid animal and as fast as we can for the safety of the innocent ones.

Gee southfan. Don’t give me the “for the last time” crap. Just hit the ignore button by my name if you don’t like what I have to say.

MadCap, for the last time
I am not the ultimate judge. I do not believe I have the ability to judge someone and take their life away. That is up to G-d. PERIOD! I have seen too many people railroaded into convictions, poor people who lack funds to hire adequate representation and mitigating circumstances to crimes. I do not believe it is within my human authority to take someone’s life. PERIOD. Call me a conservative.

southfan. Would I be correct in assuming that you would like to house all murderers for the remainder of their natural born days and all at taxpayers expense? That would be a slap in the face to the victims families. Victims families tax money to pay for food and shelter of the monster that killed their loved one.

Too bad life is not black and white? This is one of those issues that can not be simplified into slogans and absolutes. It just doesn’t work.

Forget logic. We have daycamps for prison. Quit playing with the thugs and the prison population will go down either by attrition or the desire not to be there. Either way is saves tax dollars for the law abiding people. I can’t count the number of times I have seen on this site about how kids born into poverty end up living a life of poverty. By the same “logic” we can assume that kids that grow up in violent families end up the same. If we cut the head off the snake before it pro creates then we wipe out the next generation of thugs. How’s that for “logic”?

Madcap, your logic has not been proven to be correct. The US has the death penalty and it has not served to deter violent crime. Check into some criminology or criminalistics research. Do you think it’s strange that the US is among countries we normally consider “third world” in the use of the death penalty?
