BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama man whose wife disappeared
off a cruise ship two weeks ago has hired an attorney to help him
get a death certificate for the woman.
Sven Vilborg of Bay Minette says the first step is asking a
court for the document. Having a death certificate would let
relatives of Michelle Vilborg collect on a $5,000 accidental life
insurance policy her husband said she had recently taken out.
Authorities believe Michelle Vilborg went overboard from the
Carnival Holiday during a cruise out of Mobile on June 15th. The
Coast Guard never recovered her body from the Gulf of Mexico.
Sven Vilborg says some relatives want to have a memorial service
now. He said he doesn't want to do so until the investigation is
complete.

Not sure anyone has said it proves anything.  It just raises legitimate questions, because most people can not relate to that kind of reaction a couple of weeks after losing a spouse of so very many years.

You people are saying that trying to collect a death certificate proves guilt?  I don’t get your logic.  The FBI doesn’t have any case on this person or they would have made an annoucement by now.  Carnival’s business is suffering due to this incident, so they are pushing for closure.  I know from frequent cruising that the cabin stewards generally know if you are in your room or not.  It should have been relatively easy to verify that he was in the room when it happened.  Either she jumped or some other passenger pushed her over…the former being more likely.

7 years is the rule of thumb, but I think “imminent peril” and international waters might shorten the process.

The real question is why the rush?  I think most people would be pushing for answers.  Not rushing to get someone declared dead.

You have to be missing for SEVEN YEARS before you get a death certificate.

My friend’s dad just went through the process. His wife went hiking a little over 7 years ago, and never came home, and they never found her. He didn’t get a death certificate until a few months ago.

I don’t know Claycity,I’m afraid to go on one! I’m afraid the wife would show me some dolphins or sharks swimming along side the boat and tells me to go catch her one,as she helps me over the rail!
LOL

this dispose of your spouse on a cruise is getting to be a pretty frequent occurance. are cruises cheaper than divorces?

And now STING and the police steps in and starts singing with “every move you make,I’ll be watching you”.I don’t really know anything about his emotional state at this time and he could still be in shock and not really able to express his grief yet.The loss of a spouse, for what ever reason, would be quite a shock, especially after many years of companionship.Although his reactions seem indifferent,at this time I’m not ready to jump on the ship of condemnation yet. There still seems to be a big hole here on information about this.Wonder what was the state of his wife’s health, physically and mentally.

The FBI is probably watching every move this guy makes and this rush to get a death certificate comes across as a dumb one.

If this was a soap opera, the audience would be waiting for the other woman to walk into the room.

The spouse seems way too accepting and non chalont about this incident.  If it were my spouse or even a close relative, I would be pushing for more searches. Seeking more answers.  I’m sure the Insurance Policy is more than $5,000, heck thats even less than some automobiles.

I agree with most.  ‘‘BS METER IS LIGHTING UP HERE’‘

More investigating.

As I stated before on one of these message boards.  I believe if it were myself in this situation…I would be asking for help from the media [other family, friends, etc.] in trying to “look” for her.  Meaning along the coast in case she washed up.  That’s only one idea, I guess. I’m assuming LE would be “looking” at other avenues.  But, as far as I can tell…he’s only given ONE interview himself and now he’s asking for a death certificate after being so devastated.  I say hummmmmmmmm, again….......
