Two local families in need will be getting a new home thanks to Habitat for Humanity and a New Orleans non-profit group. WKRG is also a proud sponsor of the event. The homes are under construction on Airview Drive in Mobile. Habitat is teaming up with Raised Floor Living, a non-profit that educates homeowners and builders about raised floor construction, something the group says is environmentally-friendly, as well as cost and energy efficient. One of the homes is being built on a slab, while the other is raised, that's because Habitat will be doing a cost and energy comparison of the two construction styles to see which one is more affordable for the low income families who move into their homes, "Habitat for Humanity's mission is always to make things as affordable as possible for these families that move into the homes and one of the ways that we can do that is by experimenting with construction methodologies that will help with the bills later on," said Habitat for Humanity's Anita Havel. The families in need won't be moving in free of charge. To get the house, they must help build their own home as well as others. They also have to pay a small down payment and a no interest mortgage. Habitat says that money goes toward helping build more homes.
