A Bay Minette woman is missing in the Gulf of Mexico after falling off a cruise ship.

The Coast Guard says 50-year-old Michelle Vilborg fell off the Carnival's Holiday around 11 o'clock Monday night about 75 miles south of Pensacola.

The Holiday left Mobile on Monday for a five day cruise to Cozumel, Mexico.

According to a news release from Carnival, a passenger heard a splashing sound in the water around 11:00 p.m. and reported it to a crewmember. The ship was turned around to search for Vilborg. Rescue crews lowered lifeboats to search for her. The crew also contacted the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard has searched approximately 1,214 square miles, an area larger than Rhode Island.

Vilborg's son says she and her husband decided just two weeks ago to take the cruise to celebrate her birthday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this individual and their family and friends," said a Carnival spokesperson.

It took me all of three minutes to find this info and I don’t know why WKRG can’t post the whole story.  Here is your answer.

http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2009/6/15/484881.html

what about the guy who feel off the Carnival Inspiration around Tampa and they found him hangin on a buoy? What is his story?  Was he pushed…was he sitting on the rail?  Why aren’t they telling us what happened?  Seems like if it wasn’t a safety issue with the ship, then Carnival would post a press release.  I have been on the Holiday twice and the Inspiration once and I don’t know how anybody could just fall overboard. My opionion is that you would have to act foolish or there would be foul play.  Again, getting a straight answer from a recent “overboard survivor” would be welcome insight.

I am so sorry to hear this story, but I am really confused as to how this could have just “happened”. I have went to cozumel twice on the Holiday, and you can’t just bend over the rail and fall off that thing!. I agree with bamabob that she or someone had to contribute to it in some way. I am 40 it does seem foolish to climb up on a rail but maybe she did.
Also, just sayin… when me and my hubby went ,uhhh, we were together. He wasnt down in the room while I was up on deck partying,or visaversa, especially the first night! That is strange to me personally.Maybe it’s just me.

talk to anybody that has worked or been on big boats off shore when they dump the garbage off. (yes, they dump in open water) it’s like ringing the dinner bell bell. you are fish food!!!!

When you go on a cruise on a vessel that flys a foreign flag I suppose the laws that apply is the ones for that country unless in U.S. waters. The case a few years back where a crew member or members raped a young lady, killed her and then threw her body over the side still lingers in my mind.I don’t recall ever hearing the results of that case from the country involved.I feel bad for the family at this time but there is still a little hope, not much ,but a little hope for a good out come.

Yeah I would not hold my breath on a reasonable explanation. We never really do on things like this. They are always trying to hide something. What it is we will never know.

I agree about the cameras! There is a site that tells you every ship that someone has fallen off of if they are suspected of jumping, or someone saw them jump. The majority were lost at sea. Mostly intoxicated people it seems. Some suicidal. Getting eaten by a shark is not the way I want to go!

Is it too much to ask to put cameras on the ship that shows the railings from end to end? The ship should never have to question how someone went over…EVER!

Taloney is on the case!  Maybe she will inform us come news time tonight.

I just don’t see a 50-year-old woman out dancing on top of the rails.  If she did drink too much, I would expect to find her passed out in a lounge chair or something.

Can’t imagine how a person can just fall off these ships.
