Hawaii Superferry Leaves The Aloha State

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii Superferry is sending its only ship back
to Alabama where the vessel was built.
The high-speed interisland ferry company suspended service and
laid off more than 200 employees earlier this month after a state
Supreme Court ruling regarding state law.
The court ruled a state law allowing the company to operate
while an environmental study is being conducted was
unconstitutional.
State lawmakers crafted that law after the court ruled in 2007
the state would need to finish an environmental study before the
ferry could begin service.
Hawaii Superferry said in a statement its Alakai ship would
leave Saturday for a three-week trip to Mobile, Ala. via the Panama
Canal.
The company says it's sending the ship back to position it for
future use.
